insurance? who are you with?

I have just done a quick go compare search for my insurance which is due for renewal at the end of the month.

I have put in all my modifications and it came up blank saying unable to insure due to mods?
WTF??????

Who are you with?

Do I just not inform them about mods?

I struggled to get anywhere near a decent quote when I let insurance companies know about my remap and dpf removal.

I managed to get my current insurer to give me a renewal of £500 with the above declared , I was getting quotes of 1-2k with the remap.

I'm with cornmarket insurance as they have a policy for HGV drivers that takes HGV entitlment as a plus point.

That's a good renewal price, I'll give them a Google

Admiral Multicar ended up more expensive for me than insuring our two cars with them on separate policies Having said that, they have always been the cheapest for me, all mods declared. Just be wary, as they will try to sting you left right and centre. Every time you make any change to anything they will charge you about £25 "admin fee".

I tried Adrian Flux having heard good things and they hilariously came up at £2k+, then were not even remotely interested in discussing the quotes and my options further.

Are they not the one who requires photos of your car from all 4 corners, interior and odometer readings?

If they are same, then out of my books. Too much of hassle doing all that.

Didn't have to take any photos, declared all my mods online. I did have to let them know my current mileage but just online, no photos once again.

I found A-Plan brilliant this year. Very competitive price and cover wise.

Elephant is part of Admiral. I hope they see your kind words, they can't get that sort of comment too often!

Slightly off topic.
Do you guys prefer to pay high premium with zero voluntary excess or you pay slightly less premium by adding voluntary excess.

For example, if I add £250 voluntary excess then my insurance goes down by £60.

What is general consensus on this?

I would never claim on the insurance unless the car was a write-off as they just slap your premiums up and will recover the money they paid you over the next few years. Then you have to declare that you made a claim in the last X years to new insurers, and you get shafted for the foreseeable future. Great.

With that in mind, I crank the excess up for a lower premium. There is an "optimal" excess where if you increase it higher, the premium stops going down. I'm not going to claim unless it is a serious amount of cash, so why not?

Insurance is a licence to print money. "Oh you have a small sticker in the back window Sir? No problem at all, but I should inform you that counts as a modification so we will charge you an additional £60 per year, on top of the £25 admin charge to cover the expense of me typing two numbers into the computer to increase your premium".

Unless you moan and then they waive the £25 fee. Which I've done many times.
