Why is my car so loud?

2011 335is
VRSF catless downpipes
AFE intake

I get that catless DP's are loud but at around 4.5K RPM, it sounds like an F1 car. It has this deafening high pitched note to the exhaust. It's awesome but I never would have expected it to be so effing loud. I wouldn't want to be next to me in a tunnel.

What kind of exhaust do you have on the car? I have the ARM catless downpipes on my car....and I barely noticed any difference between them and the stock downpipes.

Did someone delete the mufflers on your car?? Or the secondary cats?

I am also running VRSF catless downpipes on an otherwise stock exhaust. It's definitely a bit louder in the mid-range under WOT and is fairly loud on a cold start.

However, if your N54 is THAT loud you may want to confirm the exhaust is bolted up properly and does not have any leaks. A few years ago I somehow lost a bolt off one of the downpipes. It was definitely very very loud when that one DP wasn't bolted securely.

An iS has more straight through muffler design, similar to PE mod or M Performance exhaust and being an E92, has no center resonator.

So stock, its only source of muffling really comes from the 4 catalytic converters. You deleted the 2 big ones, so you have nearly a straight piped system with 2 cats. Its going to make noise.

That is weird. I don't have secondary cats, but have vibrant 1792 2 1/2" HF resonators in their place. I also have a 2 1/2" X-pipe in place of the resonator, as I have the sedan. I can say it's fairly quiet at Hwy speeds of 80 mph etc.

If you didn't have a good seal on one of your downpipes, you'd probably blow a code.

There is a specific one for that issue. I can't remember the exact numbers & letters. I had that problem & fixed it by installing new BMS gaskets & aligning the downpipes to the mid-pipes better. I'm a big fan of the BMS gaskets.

That's why he says 4.5k rpm... on the highway you are what 2.8k rpm ish at most around 80 mph.

As soon as you go WOT with the car (I have same exhasut sepcs except x pipe, have stock one) and it hits 3.5 rpm is just screams and then 4.5k rpm almost F1-ish.

This is another reason why I like this car so much, on the highway my car sounds like a prius when crusing but if you give it it goes.

I'm at about 2550 rpms doing 80mph. I agree, fairly quite on the Hwy. I have 335is mufflers w/ the flap wide open (basically the PE exhaust).

Yep, you get on it at 80 to get around some dumb@ass doing 70 in the fast lane, it gets loud!!

Oh nice didn't know/forgot you also installed a IS muffler.

Are you automatic? At around 74 mph I'm at like 2850RPM but I am manual.

Yes. Automatic.

On a side note, The 335IS sits higher at 80mph. I have a friend that has one. I think the gearing in the rear diff has a lot to do with it.

Ok thx for the input. Glad I'm not the only 335is that sounds like an F1 car lol. On a cold start in my garage is so damn loud.

MHD flash time options and remove cold start, that will help make it a bit more tolerable.

It just doesn't have a cold start rpm. It just starts like a hot start. Falls right to normal idle.

Worked great on my car, made me neighbors hate me less
