yeah its a tiny storage area the size of a small book, then that pushes forward to reveal the boot area . must be for skis or something .

What about something like this? Can get them cheap online, easily removed and won't go flying around the back when you make a turn.

there was an optional ski bag stored in there. To keep your seat from getting wet after a day at the alps.

You either find a replacement arm rest, or you add stuff to the back of the seats via aftermarket.
The "storage" in the rear of the console is basically an ashtray. That space at the bottom of the console would be better served with 12V outlets for whatever gadgets your children need power for.
