1) what is the actual purpose of doing this other than cosmetic? It says "shortcuts" what "shortcuts" are you referring to? Like someone said, on the CCC controller if you hold the wheel in the direction of the function you want for ~2 seconds, it will jump there (i.e. hold down for audio, right for nav, up for bluetooth, etc) the std one is a pile of junk being able to jump around all options with one press of a button is way better.

if a traffic announcement pops up you don't want/need to hear, I can't kill it with the old controller... (though I thought I could, but after car integration updated I couldn't). With the newer controller, you just click the button back to what you were using.

If you have navigation on and want to see the menus of cd or radio you still have to mess with old controller you don't with the new one. I had a passenger play just as I was coming to a junction. One press instantly back to Nav, 2 second shortcut... gone the wrong way

I agree the 2 second hold is better than nothing but its NOTHING like the later controller

2) people keep mentioning a "software update" First off, how do you know what software version you're currently running??

If the car never had serious issues when in warranty, you can more or less bet the thing is on the original JUNK software it came with. Microsoft release patches every month, you think BMW software engineers are better ? might be slightly unfair as fewer people trying to steal you banking details on the car.... But after the fight I had to make BMW update the car even when I'm paying, you have to wonder what they are up to. Mine is a much better car afterwards, faster, smoother more economical and with what feels like a new(auto) gearbox. Before it would do really nasty changes about 40% of the time and always changes at the wrong revs, now its normal !!! They phoned 3 times to try and put off my booking, then on 3 occasions when I dropped off the car they tried to persuade me not to do it, they even printed some garbage to prove it didn't need doing. Then said well only one minor bit could take an update, but if you want to do it.... the thing was running software 6 years OLD and NOTHING had ever been updated.

If all it does is introduce a few "shortcuts" that we already have, and provide a newer cosmetic look, then I think it might be more trouble than what it's worth to do this.

How often do you play with the toys, you're very wrong with thinking your 2 second short cut is the same as u get on a new switch
example...(from memory)

lets say you choose to have all 8 configurable memory buttons on head unit for radio stations...
now driving along using the sat nav and you want to go from a radio station to a cd.

old controller - pull back and hold for 2 seconds, now nudge up twice, scroll right and push down...
new controller - push the cd button...

and if any traffic conditions mean you have to think about actually driving whilst trying that you get dumped back out of everything and have to start all over again.

if you didn't know the 2 second bit its more like

nudge up, nudge up, nudge up, push down, nudge up, nudge up, scroll right, scroll right, scroll right, push down, crash !!!!

just writing that, its almost easier to pop round and fit the new one for you....

just getting used to it... so much better one press to all the functions instantly..... radio, cd, nav, all faster than it took for you to read those three words...

and back is great to, hit "option" scroll down to adjust balance / bass / treble etc. and hit back to go back to wherever you had been just before u tweaked settings.

as I posted elsewhere 09 2007 build with MASK system. Car updated to latest integration... new controller completely dead.... updated gateway to 03 2009 files on MASK and new controller has all functions working.... old controller now dead

I have a 2011 3 series with that newer idrive controller. any chance i am able to fit the idrive controller from new 2014 3 series model into my car using roughly the same method? or is shaped differently and not worth it?

Are you talking about the touch controller for the NBT?

Can't be retrofitted into a CIC, the NBT controller uses a different controller and the CIC doesn't have the software to interpret the commands.

Yeah I was hoping for the touch controller but I guess that won't work. Now it could just be me I swear when I had a loaner the other day the idrive controller felt different and more responsive. It wasn't a touch one tho. I could just be making all this up and my idrive controller has just been worn down and I need a new one...

If I remember correctly, all of the 2014 F30's have the NBT touch controllers.

Did the controller look like this?

Yeah it actually did. And I notice that is the touch idrive controller right? Looks like a replacement idrive controller is gonna be the solution in the mean time. Any recommendations on where to buy oem parts?

TischerBMW is one of the best places, getBMWparts.com

I usually compare prices between Tischer, ECSTuning and a couple other places.

So is there a verdict on this?

I am trying to get mine to work too.

I have an older E92 and i am having the same issue with the scrolling working.

It seems that the update doesn't always work..

Did you do something different to get the CIC working rather than just updating the software?

MANY THANKS

how old is the car?

if its so old you can't get the 8 button controller to work I guess you have one of these systems

1) CCC system with the old haptic (force feedback) controller and 2 buttons (early 2006 build)
2) Business MASK (non widescreen system) 2007 to 2008 build. This can be coded to make the new controller work, that's how my car is. But a full main dealer integration update doesn't give the new controller ANY functionality at all in Business MASK system cars before 2009 car build date. And no BMW dealer will ever help u sort that out. Took a guy who knows what he's doing 10 minutes to fix it. (he changed the build date of my car to some point in 2009 (I think 03 2009) and then updated gateway software) So I think he made the control software operate as per LCI build cars for business MASK setup....

If it has CIC then they came with 8 button controller, but they can work the old way with the old controller. But you'd be mad to suffer that.

Early 2006 with CCC, the wiring is different to power haptic feedback on idrive. There are posts where some say they rewired and left off the power. However the scroll doesn't happen, I believe CCC hardware maybe different. Never read a post to say they really resolved this.

Early 2007 with CCC, non haptic feedback. Plug in the new controller and see if scroll works. If not get whole car integration updated. (you could do the gateway update only but you'd be an idiot). If scroll doesn't work the software is original junk, update the car it will be a better vehicle.

If in either of these you lose scroll functionality, you can navigate via steering wheel buttons.. If its a 2007 car I'd leave it like this till you update the software. I don't believe the coding cares which controller is fitted, anyone know better? Even so rather than mess about just lift console trim at rear and plug wires in old controller code then refit to new controller and push trim down.

Late 2007 with CCC, plug it in. It just works

Business Mask, (non widescreen idrive) you have to do gateway G2 update to 2009 spec (LCI update?) Otherwise no idrive controller features work (other than illumination).

widescreen ccc that new should just work

non wide business mask won't work, but can be made to by coding hero in 10 mins, but I believe its not a conventional way of doing things. Its not a case of updating software that was "intended for your car" regardless of options or newness of software. (Its a case of adding software from a different model... the later LCI facelift car software on Mask G2)

Hello guys.
I've got a 06/2007 e93 with ccc. Which cic controller do I need to buy for the upgrade as I've seen some with a CD button on and also with a MEDIA button on?
Many thanks in advance.

Hi again folks . I've just fitted a cic controller with my ccc and all it does is light up. My car is a June 2007 325i e93. The part number of the control is 65829267955 and it has the MEDIA button on rather then the CD button. Hope someone can help me please?
