Thanks for the explanation. But wouldn't a good fail safe be making it in reverse? What would happen if it couldn't expel the boost into the atmosphere?
The reason they fail is because the door hinge system wears out and doesn't seat properly. Therefore the boost never builds up properly, and causes all kinds of issues since the motor thinks the pressure should be there. If it couldn't dump the boost to regulate the pressure you would end up with over boost. That would either put you into limp mode, or destroy the motor/turbo. The wastegate goor is held shut via a vacuum solenoid and opens/closes to regulate pressure.

Envious of people who can turn a wrench like this! Will you do a walnut blast after the turbo install or has it been done before? Good luck!

I did my walnut blasting at 115k miles. About to hit 150k soon and I will be doing it again, bought a kit the first time which saved a lot of $. I've helped friends out with it too, takes about 2 hours start to finish.
