How high is our population of bmw techs on the forum?
Not only bmw dealer but also indy techs. I am just curious as I always ask my techs if they visit here. Almost all of them say no. But if you do... As a tech do you learn new things here that you otherwise would not learn through your classes or however you stay updated? Do you find the place a great source of information? One tech was telling me the forums cause all types of headaches for them from people coming in wanting stuff done that other did on the forums they visits

I am a technician, ASE CMAT, MTT, L1,L2, Federal Brake Inspector, F.S.E., blah, blah. I am not specifically a BMW tech, I own one. My main income is from being a transit bus technician. This forum has some good info, and alot of misinformation.
I use service infromation and diagnostic strategies to repairs vehicles, not silver bullets. The advantage of using a forum like this to see "common" issues and upgrades. For instance, my car stalled one evening then restarted fine. The next morning it is "dead", no lights, no crank etc. I check battery voltage(w/ DVOM), good 12.60volts. Check voltage at fuse relay box, 3 volts. Found HUGE voltage drop at the B+ connection at fuse/relay box, 9.6volts, wiggle wire, system becomes live. There is a TSB/BMW product quality update concerning this issue. I THEN, come onto forum, search faults relating to the fuse box. Common problem. Call bmw dealer where I have an account, parts shipped, $220, next day fixed. I really only come here because I own one, and am an enthusiast. BMW techs will likely not come here or only lurk because then they would be hounded by cheap people wanting free info, long distance diagnostics etc.. Lawyers, Doctors and other "professionals" don't do pro bono work except in certain circumstances. cheers jz

As a Level 3 BMW technician, soon to be level 1 within years end. I try not announce i work on cars let alone BMW..I have no problem helping people out here and there but in my opinion its the miss conception I'll work on you car for free.. You dont go to Wal-Mart and expect shit for free. Favors are one thing, but some people are unbelievable
