Have any of the 335 guys run a 545/550?

What do you think the result would be. I'm talking about straightline only.

If any of the 335 owners in southern california are interested in running an e60 545/550, then we can set something up. There's some interested 545/550 owners on the other board that would be willing to partake.

One can always look at magazine numbers and make a guess, but actually doing a real world test is always better for comparison's sake. The results can always be surprising as I was able to match a steptronic 550 while driving a stock 6-speed manual 545.

Yeah but then you are still going to get complaints that the race will really come down to the driving. Go to a 1/4 track with both cars and the same driver and get some good times. See which car the same driver can get to go the fastest.

Is this persianwarlord? Remember me with the red m3? Well while driving the manual 545, I actually edged out that same m3 up to about 100. You can say it was the driver, but the m3 is SMG.

If you remember, on the way back from bimmerfest, the M3s we were driving were about even. I remember you got a little jump on the shift as I lifted off the gas for a moment. Certainly not the fastest shift, but I lifted out of habit.

Also, I put a few car lengths on a 645. That one is a bit weird, but the 645 did have some chrome 20s. And I was bumper to bumper with a 550 which has about 35 more HP. So you never really know.

If anything does happen, we can do runs from a stop, but also runs from a roll to eliminate driver error a bit. This is all just for fun and comparison's sake. Win or lose, it doesn't really matter.

m_bazeepaymon, not sure what e90 you're driving now, but bring it to the eurocarsunday meets. We'll do some canyons. I haven't been out there in awhile.

I own a 545 but have test driven a 335 coupe. The 335 felt stronger and faster than my 545. While both cars will put you back into your seat when floor the gas pedal, that feeling was stronger in the 335. When the lease is up on my 545 next April, I will be getting a 335 coupe.

What difference would there be between a 550 and a 650? The weight difference isn't really that big of a factor with those two, they're both pretty beefy

You'll be maybe a few car lengths ahead but around 100+ the 550 should pull away.

^Just for fun. One will get a chance to meet some car enthusiasts, and check out the cars. Where's the harm in that.

Those 545 and 550s will be smoked! Guess no E92s want to run big brother... I think they should go pick on those IS 350s.

A 545 is putting down 25xrwhp while a 335 is putting down at least 15rwhp more and 20rwtq. Taking that in mind and the difference in weight the 335 will take a 545 easy.

Please stop with the magazine racing. Real life is where it's at. These are some real life numbers from a 545 owner in PA. Here's the link and quote:

Hi all.The weather has cooled down on the east coast so it's time for more testing.

I tried several runs this morning and had to learn my starting method all over again. It seems that I must modify my method several times during the year in order to get the best times.Today the best method was,DTC/DTS off, brake torque to 1200 rpm, release brake and push gas to floor. My best time is:
0-60........5.00
60'..........2.00
330'........5.72
1/8 time..8.72
1/8 spd...81.90
1/4 time..13.43
1'4 spd...104.70
0-100......11.55
Weather conditions as follows:
temp........56F
dew pt......43F
bar..........30.20
altitude....400'
humidity..63%
I am sure Zman will apply the proper correction factors when he has time .I am not sure if the factor will be a positve or negative number.I have a feeling it will be close to zero.

When are you west coasters going to do more testing?
So, would you please be so kind again and tell me how easy it will be for a 335 to take down a 545? Yes, the 335 will probably beat the 545 but not by much. There is no flame intented here. Just information to be shared.

Also, drivers make a big of a difference. From personal experience I know that heezyo2o is a real good driver. I'd like to see heezyo2o go up against a 335.

I have noticed you post on e60.net as well. Then you must know that there are 545s running around that can keep up quite well with 550s. Thus far, the best times (0 - 60 and 1/4 mile) for an e60 v8 engine has been with the 4.4 and not 4.8. Of course, these times with the 4.4 are more the exception than the rule.

Magazine RACING?!!!!!! Where did a magazine test a 545 or a 550 on a dyno? Please dont just throw words that are not true. I did not get my results from magazine racing.

Now about your friends test? Can you tell me how did he measure those numbers? Don't tell me Gtech because I have tested Gtech and Gtech Pro at 1/4mile tracks and they were always showing 4-5mph extra and .3-.4 faster. If he did it on a 1/4 mile drag strip then that would be one of the fastest 545 i have seen in my life.

As i said before.... and i said it on E60 forums as well.... The 545 dyno's 15rwhp 20rwtq less than the 335 and weighs 400lbs or so more. You do the math.

I bet you when the 535 comes out it should hang if not beat a 545 or even a 550. I said it on E60 forums as well... BMW should make sure they have a new engine to replace the one in the 550 if they want to introduce the 535.

I have nothing against any of the 335 or 550... Im looking my self at a 335 or 535 soon for a daily driver. Please dont turn this into a biased fest. Larger badge numbers (550) doesnt mean always faster.

With all due respect, the figures you quoted up there are no more real to me than what I read in a magazine. In fact, I'd be more inclined to believe what I had read in a magazine, since two cars tested in the same magazine were run with the same correction factors, good research habits, and consistent driving skill. I'm sure your friend is a fine driver, but I'd probably be more inclined to believe someone who didn't own the car in question.
