E90 (Base Stereo) - New Speakers - New Amp - Next steps
Help ! Best location - where to tap speaker Line out for AMP input as speaker line in ?? not planning to use Line out RCA converter.
and planning to install new speaker wire from AMP in trunk back to all 6 speakers… so assumed best place to run inputs was from speaker location ?? I’m a newbie on DIY stereo upgrade but trying to do some research… tap the community - especially “ctuna” Car - 2011 E90 328i Xdrive - BASIC / Base stereo - 6 speakers/no amplifier - really Crappy sound. Currently has 2 x 4 in in front doors and 2 x 4 in rear stage look like same speakers. and 2 x 6 in woofer under seat - hot glued. NO amp in trunk.. no harness there either (I think). I’m thinking of keeping the BMW HU no need to change. And I like having a CD player. I can tune HU output signal using DSP in AMP. I want to add new Amp in trunk, where spare would go, has run flats and install 6 new speakers. I’m going for quality not WHO level volume ![]() I’m trying to avoid modification to mounting and using BMW replacement speakers from Morel. Costly but I believe the quality is top notch ?? My only concern is find replacement MALE plugs to fit the FEMALE receptacle sockets on the speakers ?? Proposed;
I believe stock HU is a 4 channel output (??) so will only use 4 channel into AMP, 6 out. I believe under seat 6 in woofer and front door 4 in speaker wired in parallel ?? so may sum rear stage and under seat woofer ?? what is best wire for AMP speaker out to each speaker? - 16 or 18 AWG will go with 16 and hope I can fit into BMW plug/sockets. what is best wire to extend HU speaker line output from speaker location to Amp? - will go with 18 awg. and is exiting Battery sufficient source to run this AMP ?? I know a lot in here to unpack. Sorry. and planning to keep yall updated - sort of my journal. start to end. Last edited by PLF; 03-24-2023 at 04:23 PM.. Reason: Better Title |

I wouldn't use coaxials . You can buy the BMW tweeter pods for
about 35 bucks a side. At least for the fronts see base system guide Morels are pretty top of the line. Don't know how there underseats are Not a fan of audiocontrol this is what I found. About the AudioControl D-6.1200 Featured in our article: Best multi-channel car amplifiers for 2023 6-channel car amplifier with digital signal processing 125 watts RMS x 6 at 4 ohms (200 watts RMS x 6 at 2 ohms) 400 watts RMS x 3 bridged at 4 ohms (4-ohm stable in bridged mode) all controls and adjustments made with AudioControl Smart-User DSP app on your laptop (PC or Mac) via USB connection USB cable included optional AC-BT24 Bluetooth adapter available I would go for a Helix BMW 7 instead of the audio control (better DSP )and maybe Jehnert xe 200's for the underseats. Base System Guide http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...5&d=1493273253 This above is general guide for base system modification this is dated but the same principles apply for wiring . DSP can take care of signal eq or you could reprogram for to Hi Fi. Hey ctuna -
thank you for the reply and links - very useful. and I have modified my plans - still working on it. see below for latest version and i attached a PDF version. with Helix M SIX DSP leading on amp choices ![]() also changed coaxial to component, cheers for that! PROPOSED - No change to BMW - HU. Speakers 2 x 4” Morel - IR-BMW4 100 Wrms - Component 2 way - front door - add tweeter to window frame. 2 x 4” Morel - IR-BMW4 100 Wrms - Component 2 way - rear stage - add tweeter to rear stage. 2 x 8” Jehnert XE 200R subwoofer or maybe Morel IP-BMWSUB82 - under seat. trying to find local distributor. for Jehnert. working on it. I'm looking at new window frames from FCP Euro to get the POD and grill for the tweeters up front. Amplifier New 6 channel Amplifier install in Trunk, add power, and new direct wiring to all speakers. Better wire quality and lower awg than factory. and either add Technic 4/6 PNP harness for HU 4 channel output to amp in trunk or tap speaker line output from speaker locations and extend wiring/connection to AMP in trunk for speaker line inputs. and then AMP outputs back to each speaker with new direct wiring? am I crazy or is the BMW BASE stereo factory wiring sufficient. I assume I would want better wiring 16 awg etc. especially for higher wattage. Amp Options - (1) Helix M SIX DSP (2) JL Audio VX600/6i (3) AC D.6.1200 With these amplifiers - can I adjust output watts to match speakers?? When Wrms is less than amp channel? i really like thee amps but Wrms is higher in some of these than my speaker rated Wrms. i assume a way to reduce risk of blow out by adding limiter on output wattage? is that a thing? Thanks again for any thoughts and comments. and sorry for long posts ![]() - Peter +1 646 737 2372 |

That should be SUPER AWSOME.
Better than most peoples home systems. You may find this Ytube series on tuning the DSP super helpful. 14 part ytube on DSP it's about the same as what Helix describes. I absolutely love the Audio control amp, it has plenty of power and options to make your speakers sound just right.
I have the underseat subs signal summed from front and rear channels which gives a great way to control tone based on your front/rear fader. Plus the ACCUBASS feature gets your speakers sounding as full as youd like specially for those underseat subs.. My other amp was a jl 600/4, so not sure how it would compare with the other famous brands around here, but AudioControl is a solid option.

If I'm pricing this right, the morel setup itself would be around $2400 and the Helix Amp another $1100? |

Thanks ALL for the feedback... awesome. and very useful.
ctunna - thank you kindly for the links on DSP tuning. !!!! A question on Passive vs Active for front door. I was planning to use a crossover with both speakers driven by Channel 1/2. but others have suggested i shoudl opt for a 8 channel amp and stay active. I'd like to stick with the Passive crossover, on initial install. surely the quality i will get will be sufficient. ??? i was also planning a crossover for the rear stage. and others again suggested a coaxial is sufficient for rear. but again I've hear folks say avoid coaxial if you can. again all comes down to money. both for amps and speakers. I'm afraid to tally this up as this is looking a bit pricey. heading out to buy a lottery ticket. |

BMW7 (also a helix match product) and Jehnert under seats and Morels I don't know how good there doors are
but the package Jehnert might be good. That should bring the cost down and still be good stuff. Or go to Gladen/ Mosconi and get one of there bundles. Guys in Britian like those and have said good things about them. amp DSP in the 50 to 100 watt range . Shoot for 50 for 100 watts for the doors . I have a Jl 600/6 with Jehnert XE 200s in floors and Morel Dotechs (now called 402's at last look. ) The amp is 75 a channel at 4 ohms , and it's enough to drive all that stuff and drive you deaf with super accurate non distorted sound real fast. And Drive around with the Windows down and still here your stuff. https://www.audiotec-fischer.de/medi...4-12-20_EN.pdf https://mosconi-america.com/portfolio/d2-80-6-dsp/ https://www.audiotec-fischer.de/en/m...up-c42bmw-frt3 https://mosconi-america.com/gladen/vehicle-specific/ Reviews from England you so say the Gladen extereme speaker kit (3 way ) and the Mosconi amp DSP's were a good combo. Also you need to be prepared to tune the DSP to get the most out of the setup. Yeah this stuff is expensive but life is kind of short for bad sound. If you value sound . If you where starting out with the Hi Fi system there is no need to rewire. But if you believe the Monster Cable thing for home stereo then ? It's true a thin cable will load up the amp and waste your signal but how much. Only thing about rewiring is it's hard to restring the Door Speakers and get them to go through the weather protecting tube. Technic use to say the stock Hi Fi wiring was good for up to 150 watts. Lamp Chord is way better than what's in it. Hard to find local distributors for the good stuff. They seem to be well hidden but they do exist. Last edited by ctuna; 03-25-2023 at 05:56 AM.. |
