Well looks like we don't have enough to split the cost of equipment and keep it at $250 for everyone to do their own cars as a group. As ^ said there's supposed to be a meet on Saturday if not cancelled so maybe there will be some people there interested that aren't on here.
If there's more interest at a later time or if anyone finds another group of people wanting to go the DIY route on this, I'd be in.

I understand the postponement for now, I would give it a little more time however. This board isn't known for its frequent activity and the bad weather this week has probably caused some distractions.
I must say things do seem to be more active here than it was in late summer and fall. |

Did it myself at home. All the parts can be bought at Harbor freight at a fraction of the cost. They even have walnut shells. I have three 25% off coupons laying around. The blaster wand is probably one of the parts that should be ordered, HF didn't have much in that department.

or http://www.harborfreight.com/40-lb-p...ter-68992.html http://www.harborfreight.com/25-lbs-...dia-92155.html I have the vacuum attachment. Air compressor This one is probably sufficient at 4.5 CFM @ 90 PSI, 5.5 CFM @ 40 PSI http://www.harborfreight.com/air-too...sor-68740.html The below is probably over kill but would be nice for garage workshop/diy. http://www.harborfreight.com/air-too...sor-93274.html Then the wand attachment I had a hard time finding but I heard amazon has one might be a diy or order from BMW. I used a combo of carb cleaner and gun cleaning kit in addition to the walnuts. But they were pretty clean when I was done. My biggest problem was I used large walnut shells not "fine" and my air compressor is only 3.4cfm@40psi and 2.2cfm@90 which was not powerful enough.

If it was $400 I'd just buy it all and invite anyone over that wants to do their cars. But since the price from what I found was over $1000 after tax and shipping etc then figured it didn't make sense for one person to buy it all and do it themselves when you could pay a shop half that to get it done. Here's some links. Compressor http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00012X7NO/...SIN=B00012X7NO The compressor above isn't available anymore so had to find one that closest matched the specs and this was it http://www.amazon.com/Campbell-Hausf...98690&sr=1-227 BMW Attachments http://www.bimmerhelp.info/Buy_Blasting_Tools.html Shop Vac http://www.walmart.com/ip/15406666?a...l5=pla&veh=sem Media Blaster http://t.harborfreight.com/portable-...obile_redirect Doc that I pulled all this from https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3Ta...TM5aEE/preview The compressors the most, if you know of a compressor that has the capacity and power to get the job done that would change everything.

I have read you want 8-14cfm@90psi but I think you could get away with smaller. What you found in your link would work great but $630 makes it hard to swallow. I think the 4.5cfm@90psi would do it and at $119.99 and 25% off would probably do the trick with some elbow grease. here's another I think would work http://www.harborfreight.com/air-too...sor-67708.html I will keep doing some searching. See if we can get the total price down. Spring might be a good time to bang this out since I can't get out of my neighborhood

http://www.harborfreight.com/air-too...sor-67708.html ($150)
http://www.harborfreight.com/portabl...obile_redirect ($35) Blasting wand directly from BMW: http://nwbmwparts.com/parts/index.cf...&siteid=217802 ($20) http://www.harborfreight.com/25-lbs-...dia-92155.html ($28) http://www.walmart.com/ip/Shop-Vac-6...38027/21089516 ($55) Misc: $50? Total: $288.00 Probably on the low end I guess but for that price it would be worth a shot I think. The only waste of money is the compressor everything else could be used and Harbor Freight is very good about returns. My .02cents

Think I may have found the answer at $299 for the compressor with a 20 gallon tank. A big part is the tank capacity so you don't run out of air every constantly.
http://www.brandnewengines.com/OCB100.aspx I'll figure out the total number and see what that looks like.

So... I'm gonna buy the stuff to do my car now that I found a compressor that's half the price. Anyone interested in doing their car themselves can come by after I get the stuff, I'll lend a hand but not doing it for you and if you buy the shells needed and bring with to do your car and willing to contribute $50 to use all the equipment that works for me. Moving from my current house to a new house still in Mooresville end of the month so I'll be doing it in the new place. PM if want to schedule a weekend to do it.

Harbor Freight Central Pneumatic 2.5 HP 21 Gallon Cast Iron Vertical Compressor- $177.99 item# 61454 or 67847 Inline Dryer/Filter- $7.99 item# 68215 PVC Air Hose, 50ft- $11.99 item# 69711 Air Blow Gun w/ 2ft extension- $3.99 item# 68257 Portable Abrasive Blaster Kit- $32.99 item# 37025 25 lb Fine Grade Walnut Shells- $24.99 item# 92155 Sub-total- $259.94 Tomkinsonbmwparts.com BMW Vacuum Adapter (BMW# 81292208037)- $63.02 Sears Craftsman 4 Gallon 5 HP Wet/Dry Vac- $71.99 Total- $394.95 The gun and the wand take a little fabricating. I took the 2ft extension wand and basically cut it in half. I use the straight wand on cylinders #1-5 and on cylinder #6 I use a bent wand. You want to make sure the compressor has at least 2 HP and the larger the tank the longer it lasts. The vacuum should have at least 5 HP peak to sufficiently suck up the shells. Good luck! |

Ended up getting everything needed to do my valves. Here is a before and after. If anyone is interested in doing there's that was going to participate in this split purchase group, let me know.
Before After. Still did some additional scraping with carb cleaner but this is what it looked like after blasting.

Yeah I can definitely tell the difference in throttle response and power. Also did the golf tee mod which doesn't make sense why they call it that but sounds better too.
