Brake pad warning only after parked cold

I have been recently getting a brake wear warning light after my E91 LCI has been parked for several hours in the "cold" (5C or 40F outside temp). The warning light goes away after warming up the car.

Would this be a sensor malfunction or a legit brake wear issue? My car is under warranty, is 3 years old and has 40k km (25k mi) on it. I am hesitant to take it to the dealer immediately coz I've done a DIY install for trailer hitch and wiring.
