logic 7 vs earthquake sws8 subwoofers?

Hello!

I own a E92 Coupe with Focal VRS100, Earthquake SWS8, Bit Ten, all driven by XD600/6 and XD1000/1 amps.

I was quite happy with my sound system, needed some months to tune the DSP to my liking. But one thing I never liked was mid-bass reproduction. I read a lot on this forum about mid-bass problems in our BMWs and the SWS8 lacking it. Till now i was running the under-seats bandpassed from 50-150 hz.

A friend of mine just bought a E92 M3, with harman kardon (logic 7?) sound system. I was really impressed about sound quality and his (mid-)bass! I couldn't believe his bass was louder and cleaner than mine...

So i listened to it closely, and tried to tune my DSP to sound it the same. I ended changing the crossover to 70-250 hz, and I have to say things improved massively!! Much better mid-bass, and I can turn up volume much louder without getting the SWS8 to clip. Still have to measure with microphone to set equalizer right, I seem to have some peaks around 300-350 hz.

Now my question: Do you think by tuning the SWS8, I could make them perform as good as or maybe better than Logic 7 drivers? Or should I get the Logic 7 subs for better mid-bass? Or maybe something even better? But it shouldn't cost more than the SWS8...

Thank you!

Earthquakes have no ability to play midbass. You need jehnerts or eton if you want a speaker that has great midbass and good bass. Or you need a dedicated sub with logic 7 woofers for dedicated midbass.

Crossing over where you are with Earthquakes likely sounds terrible

If the earthquakes can't pass midbass, what are they good for. They're literally a mid bass woofer lol

I also was considering buying Earthquake SWS8 underseats. I don't own them and this is what i've read from others feedback.

However after extensive research it became clear of what frequency they are designed for and will they allow clean blend with the other speakers without leaving a spectrum hole in sound.

Earthquakes sound best in the midbass to bass territory. Meaning there is small cap where is transition to 4" door drivers.
Since our 4" drivers can't really produce any midbass the underseat one has to be capable to cover this transition.

However if you put 6.5" into the door then i can see Earthquakes might be suitable.

Then again will 6.5" to tweeter transition will be smooth? This creates another problem.

Thus it is preferred to use underseats that are not designed for more bass oriented (like Earthquakes) rather something that can cover the transition from 8" to 4" speaker.

Here we have to also consider if you like bass heavy songs and don't want subwoofer in trunk (get SWS). If want more balanced sound then get something else like Logic7 one.

I'd imagine you can push Earthquake to about 33hz with steep rollover (24db/oct & chybysev HPF) given their Fo is 30hz. However this means the higher frequencies won't be as clear as with Logic7 one that definitely does not have fo in the 30 range. With DSP you can turn off other channels and see what noise Earthquake makes in the range of 33Hz to 150hz - probably not great. Possibly need to reduce LPF to something like 100hz or even lower. Thus you already have spectrum hole and speakers that don't work in E9x platform with stock speaker sizes.

(Logic7 has Fo probably something 45 to 50hz meaning it is designed to cover the midbass).

In this comparison i would preffere logic7 underseats because it works better with next smaller size 4" speakers.

Ultimately would buy aftermarket - like Jehnert to go to the next level of output clarity and you outperform Logic7 which was your goal?

mid bass woofer vs mid bass driver.

There's the difference. One specialises in frequency other plays larger range of frequencies.

To sum up:
Do you think by tuning the SWS8, I could make them perform as good as or maybe better than Logic 7 drivers?
No/Yes (only low end will be better) that is not mid-bass.

Or should I get the Logic 7 subs for better mid-bass?
Yes

Or maybe something even better? But it shouldn't cost more than the SWS8...
Yes, something that is not SWS8 but better than Logic7.

What are they good for? Nothing really..
the logic 7 woofers will destroy them in every aspect to include frequency response and power handling..
