Higher Voltage for USB Charging?

Is there any way to make the E9x USB ports put out a higher voltage? Not sure what they already put out, but with the phone screen on it basically maintains a charge or slowly drops. I don't really want to use the cigarette lighter port either because I want to have a clean interior and can't close the ashtray with a bulky charger being there.

Noticed this slow charging issue while using Waze and Bluetooth audio on a long trip when I got the low battery warning on my phone although it had been plugged in for 2 hours. Back when I had an MMI unit installed it charged very quickly. I'd prefer retaining CIC USB Audio though, just with a faster charge.

If you understand electronic's it's that USB has a standard voltage.
And overvoltage would just endanger the electronics.
But the chargers you attach have different current ability's.
And so does the OEM USB ports .
You need a charger with a higher current output if you want it
to charge your phone and run it at the same time.

Also the older your phone is the more of a current hog it is.

My old Sammsung S5 had the problem you are describing even when being run
on the 2 amp usb plug on my charger/mount from the lighter .

New Galaxy20 Note ultra charges even when I run Waze and Music app on the same charger.

I don't have a factory USB but if I recall it puts out .5 amps.

0.5amps is correct. Too bad they used this standard all the way up until 2014. I've decided it will be much easier to get the Aukey 4.8A Dual USB Car Charger as it's very low profile and can fit in the ashtray lighter port while still allowing the lid to close.

4.8A should be really quick charging as well, especially since I'll likely only charge one device at a time anyways.

if can do small car wiring modifications you can source USB-C socket from ebay and connect in instead of your
it will require external 12V source in addition but usb-c will provide additional power

Ooh that's a good idea, I didn't think about USB-C. I may give that a shot in the future. I notice you're also the guy who responded to my bluetooth audio problem. Once I figure the audio issue out and figure out my wireless CarPlay, I'll give this a shot.

If you are just looking for a higher current charger there are many 12 volt cigarette
socket to usb chargers with higher amp outputs some with phone holders and voltmeter/current indicators.

Yes that's what I currently have, however the cable still doesn't fit under the lid to close. Plus I have to have my phone plugged into the car for the myBMW app to update.

Just looking for the best OEM+ solution that makes the car feel new. This plus Wireless CarPlay would make the car feel brand new.

I switched the cigarette ashtray for the oddments tray, then put a higher amperage charger in the unused socket, securing everything with zip ties under the console trim, then ran the cable to the arm rest. In my case, I used an apple MagSafe puck, but you can choose whatever you like to plug into the charger. It’s a bit of a hack, but it’s all completely hidden and works as intended.

A bigger problem, at least in Northern hemisphere winter, is heat. When routing heated air to the rear seats (I.e. my kids like heat when it’s cold) the air passing through the center console to warm the rear of the cabin causes any phone in the arm rest to overheat. I end up having to charge it outside of the arm rest so that it doesn’t get too hot.

Oh, and I run everything through an Avin 12.3” display, which supports wireless CarPlay very well.

actually the phone and tunnel is heating only if centre console was removed sometime and air pipe is not correctly seated afterwards, because when fitted correctly , the air in pipe should not mess with tunnel air

It’s all connected correctly: the air in the pipes is hot and radiates heat sufficient to cause a phone to overheat.

I am glad for you. My experience is different, then again I’m using my phone to power a wireless CarPlay system, which ramps cpu and radios way up on the phone (with the attendant heat).

thats another and more importat source of the heating
but then you even have advantage
pre-lci tunnel have switch which allows to direct cold air to the space under armrest
so you can turn the jog on the rear grill to cold air, open the switch and try to cool down the phone.

These should fit; pull 12V from the lighter and get full power USB-C. Relocate Aux-in if you want to keep it. I haven't done it yet, but it's on my list:

The kids are with their mom for thanksgiving this year, so we did just that when traveling this weekend: problem solved.

Indeed, though that only works when the kids aren't in the car. They prefer heat in the winter.

So a little update, USB-C is not plug and play with CIC. Not really sure the next step to try. I don't have much time to do any tinkering when I'm at school.

Any chance I can make an adapter for it? Do you have or know where I can get the pinout layouts?

before you will cut and repin any cable i would advise you to try this usb-c socket instead of the usb audio socket under armrest, if you have such option

You mean to instead try the USB in the glove compartment?
