Heat under hood v scoops/vents/etc
I know these discussions dissolve into worthless drivel sometimes. But I have not seen one here- only had n54 for less than a year.
What I do know is my n54 with the dual cone intake plus the other dp, intercooler, charge pipe etc- feels sluggish at slow speeds here in VA summer in the 90's and high humidity One night i had to run out after a rain storm and it went from high 90's to 72- car felt much peppier. I am not claiming anything miraculous. but def more than butt horsepower. I get the physics of hot air in So does adding scoops or vents help with low speed pep? I am guessing not i know when spooled up the turbos are probably sucking more air than any little plastic grill scoops can direct. Do vents in the hood help get the hot air out quicker and reduce intake air temp. Or is it nominal? I honestly don't care about looks. my car oil temp never gets over mid way. In traffic on these hot humid days the fans are running wide open it sounds like sometimes. Ram Air in its simplest definition just funnels more air at or in the intake space. I know you need speed to achieve that volume. Do they help with a dual cone set up any? Or is there enough air already flowing through the kidneys? |

I lost 3mph running open inlets(dci basically) vs stock airbox at the track in hot weather. I'm not a believer in DCI unless its cold weather or part of an inlet system that requires open filters.
I am planning on hood vents as soon as I get more important stuff done first. I dont like running without a cowl because it makes my AC work like crap sucking in engine bay heat

I have used Vette C7 rear oil coolers inlets... they are not a perfect fit due to a different radius/bend of e92 hood however they work well and could be made fit perfectly once you donīt mind to mod them... that what I will do once respraying the hood/bumper eventually... so far I take it as a functional thing :-)
And it really works, you can see the heat coming from them when stuck in a stop/go traffic or even moving slowly... while driving in the rain you see a dry path on the hood too...

I don't use cones. I use an upgrade CAI. I have an AFE momentum air-box. Yes you sacrifice maybe 12 hp by doing so, but you create horsepower by running "cold" air to the turbos....
I know there's two schools of thought on this one. The hot air guys have the data etc., I'm not here to refute it or say it's "false news". I just like more cold air going to the turbos, which get hot as h@ll to begin with. This begs the question, why are we pushing more hot air to a part of the engine that is already extremely hot to begin with ? Just food for thought. |

I havenīt looked into the carbon mainly because of the s/h costs to oversea plus the fitments issues (and hence having a hard time to solve it with the vendor in a timely/money making sense manner). These scoops can be found on eBay cheap since owners are changing them to carbon or modded ones to enhance the scooping effect... using them as vents (the opposite way) works just fine...

I'll tell you what a carbon fiber hood did me wonders oil temp wise. If I did 4-5+ WOT runs my temps would reach 260 and my hood and engine bay would feel hotter than a furnace for a while until the car cooled down. Now my temps same driving style don't go past 245 and the CF hood feels hot, but it seems the heat disperses so quickly. I'm hoping that once I remove my cowl and put on the BT filters even more heat will be able to escape the backside of the hood. Mind you I don't have an oil cooler.

I haven't heard/ seen anyone complain on this forum about a replica M3, Carbon hood not fitting correctly. Maybe I'm wrong? Idk. I don't own a carbon fiber hood to be honest. I think back in the day, vendors sold replica M3 steel hoods, but you can't find them now days. The only ones I've seen are CF. I know you can paint CF any color you want too. |

Removing the cowl will do the contrary at speeds 50mph+ as it will push air in the engine bay from the high pressure region under wind-shield. It will work at stand still though.

Hmm interesting. Isn't air flow good though if ambient temps are cool? I'm guessing if it's a hot day it could be worse 50+ mph.

1. Rain entering the engine bay via vents. 2. Water close to alternator. If you have DCI, then hydro lock could also be another problem. |

you can always oil your DCI and then the water would just bounce off. That is what my friend did who daily drives with 4 hood vents in rainy Vancouver

I plan to do the Mr. 5 upgrade at some point
Id like to get a Dinan if it wasnt ridiculous expensive. Other than that, i may try the REVDOP airbox at some point. https://revdop.de/produkt/bmw-n54-luftfilterkasten/ None of this until I do upgraded inlets though. Stock box works great for me for now and costs me nothing, more power other places first.

Have you seen the Arma one? What is your end power goal? Will you be keeping the box setup if you upgrade turbos? |

I will keep stock turbos for a while, probably a year or two upgrade. I do plan to keep the box no matter what, yes. I see a huge difference in performance with open cones in the middle of summer even with a great intercooler, so its not worth it for me personally.
I havent contacted Revdop no, just something on my radar. Feel free to link to me Arma, not familiar with that.
