my car makes the same ticking sound as well, once you blip the throttle it goes away. I scan my car all the time, no codes or anything and car runs like a beast. 45000 miles on her so far.

Did you have this issue before? Or is this the first? I honestly think that it's not normal to have a ticking sound THAT loud. I mean, mine engine ticks too, but that's just from the WG and it's not very noticeable.

Have you thought about taking it to the shop or dealership?

I haven't heard the noise come back since that night and it seems like enough people here have the same exact noise that i think i could feel safer to say its "normal" for this engine.

Doesn't sound normal to me but there doesn't seem to be anything you could do about it either....

Well, that's good that it's the "norm", but will you let us know if anything comes from this ticking noise? (like if your engine blew up or something......)

TIA

they are extremely noisy engines in general, although one customer came in with really bad vanos issues, and his car sounded like it had zero oil in it, he ended up putting the car to stock and taking it to the dealer to have the camshafts and bearings replaced.

I listened closely the next time I heard that noise on my 335. It was definitely something pneumatic(air) related; some sort of relief pump/valve.

I think I have found the cause of this strange ticking noise!

I got the exact same noise as the OP's video showed, and as someone said earlier in this thread, the noise is coming from the evap control valve.
I also found that some people have had some problem with this valve and got a fault code (P2418).

Shiv wrote in an old thread about this code and suspected a loose gas cap.
And thats when I realized that my lovely wife was refueling the car and had some problems with tighting the cap a couple of days ago (first time ever she refueled this car )...

...and after I tighten the cap (which was a little loose) the sound is totally gone!

I am fairly confident my waste gates are rattling however it sounds nothing like this at idle... only when i blip the throttle and it sounds like a can shaking if I am near a wall the sound can bounce off of... car is running great though after I replaced VANOS

That is not wastegate rattle. I recall someone having this noise and it was their Solenoids.

Just a FYI my car never made that noise again after that night. It is a noisy Evap valve and nothing to worry about.

if you mean over engineering their constantly failing injectors, coils, pumps, turbos and wastegates that they have recycled over the years, then yes......

I had the same issue, and when I contacted BMW about it, they said it was the lifters. After post after post, that seemed to the consecutive answer. Check with your dealer, mine said certain years was recalled.
