I have now had my car back from the dealer.
The dealer wanted it for one day but I persuaded them to keep it for two days as I didn't want to miss any of my work related activities. So they agreed - In the end it took them 2.5 days. The work carries out was as so:- Reprogram the ECU memory Remove cam head cover Adjust valve clearances Replace two gaskets (as they don't reuse gaskets - I did spot the price of one gasket as ~70GBP+VAT) Thats all that was done and it took 2.5 days. I seemed to have lost all my radio station presets and my MPG data (I hadn't reset the trip computer) I should now see if there is any difference over the coming weeks. |

I must admit with all the water about at the moment each time I push the starter button I'm half expecting the rough idle to have returned . However did a few hundred miles over the weekend and last tank full of unleaded returned 438 miles (i was down to an indicated 9 miles range in the tank before I found a shell garage) . I have filled it with V power to see if range increases or performance. Still enjoying throwing it around. Paul |

Yep sure do rack up the miles - I'm in Switzerland at the moment, so at the moment i'm in a Peugoet 307 SW (Boo!!). You'll all know in a few weeks or so. Didn't try V Power in mine but found Tesco 99 made a difference in running. I stopped using it when it got too expensive. I can squeeze 500 if I drive constant 75/80 mph |

Just to update you guys.
I have found that my rough idling on start up hasn't seem to gone away. It happens first thing in the morning or when the car has been sat around and then started. My father drove around in it last week after quite some time (as i'm always in it). He told me it felt quite sluggish. I personally think it will be down to a sensor. Does anyone know if there an idle speed valve on this engine? And where it is or where the MAF sensor is? Or what BMW use as an equivalent? |

Thanks for the update,
After the dealership reprogramming the computer afew weeks ago, I too seem to have the gremlins back but not bad enough to go back to them with at the moment. Cold start up doesn't always bring in the high idle unless I blip the throttle, hot starts are fine. Overall running and performance is fine now getting 450 miles out of a tank, thats having a fairly high cruising speed and not giving it too much right foot on the back roads. Am intending taking the si to Donnington next weekend and Snetterton 2 weeks after that for the touring car racing, the 320si's have been having some success, any one else thinking of going? I'm also trying to think of a way to get an invite into the pits to have a closer look at the BMWs and take some pics. If anyone knows anyone who could help it would be appreciated. Back to the snag ShereKhan I had an old 87 Range Rover which had really bad starting and cold running problems it was sorted by changing the MAF (RR equivalent). Cheers Paul |

It doesn't bother me that it was built after their sucess - as mines a company car as opposed to daddy's car........ I can crash mine without my dad telling me off |

Feels pretty special to me homo or not,
the crudely translated german spec sheet did it for me when it mentioned engine lowered and moved back in chassis to gain better handling balance, closer ratio gears with top gear not being a cruise ratio, bigger stronger wheel bearings and larger discs and pads all introduced to get these parts onto the 2006 WTCC car. Yes would like the 280BHP of Turkingtons or Jacksons si but then they only do 18 laps of 1.9 mile Donnington circuit between refills. I think if it was a marketing exercise they would have charged more than the M sport 320i and produced more than 2600 overall and just 500 of which for UK market. This is the first car I've driven for a long while where I actually feel I don't need to look at whats coming onto the market place. But then I'm biased as I'm one of the 500 few Paul |

Just a reminder what kicked this tread off,
Thursday long trip home in the rain but when I reached dry tarmac really hit the red line to exercise the engine. When I parked up at home the idle was as lumpy as a lumpy thing. Called out BMW assist on Friday morning and mentioned this had happened before and been cured by a reload of idle map in the ECU sure enough this sorted the problem again, it seems my airflow sensors when exercised fully forgot the starting position (idle). Also showed some interest and got a tour through the engineers plug in computer checks everything including heated rear screen performance but noted that it had a hard latch (constant problem) on the airflow sensors plus was showing engine loom out side the test parameters. The BMW "Doctor" wrote a prescription for me to take to local dealer which I duly did and have it booked in for a week of fettling posibly new engine loom and airflow meter. Plus having two kerbed wheels replaced £335 F and £355 R for those who wondered how much they would cost to replace. Will post when jobs done. Paul |

Paul,
How have you managed to get the dealer to replace wheels FOC? I think i'm going to call out BMW assist to, i've been told by lease that I can call them if I think its serious enough. Seems a bit weird to call out a "RAC" type bloke to look at a car that drives. Normally i'd drive it to the dealer and kick up a fuss. |

well it would be nice to have the wheels changed FOC, ShereKhan. But I'm having to pay for that bit. It does seem weird to have to take a now fine running car in for predictive maintenance but as the call out guy said cheaper to fix it now than me keep calling him out and BMW getting bad press over reliability issues. It will be interesting to see what they actually change next week.
Paul Still a fantastic car its starts off slow to accelerate but by hanging in to the red line you look in the mirror and everybody else is left behind, and still rate it as one of the best handling cars for hilly adverse camber bends. Should be a good weekend for the 320si boys in the BTCC rounds at Snetterton as the fast track is supposed to be dry this weekend. |

Hmm I thought i'd try the ASSIST route too yesterday.
Called them out he arrived 1hr later then expected. Took a look at the car with his OBDC dianostic kit. Found no fault - suprise suprise! Had a chat to him about a few things like the MAF and what else could be causing the problem. He's suggested I let BMW have it for a week so that their specialist from Bracknell can check it over. He's also mentioned about having a loan 320si to compare with.?? He did mention about another 320si in my area which has had a coil pack failure. He also mentioned about some serious QC faults on lots of E9x cars. From what he told me sounded like I'd got a car built by Italians! (i've had a pininfarina built car and a Fiat before) (Nothing against Italians - they build the sexiest cars - but don't build them well) I've just called my lease company as I need to keep them in the loop as they can apply some pressure on BMW. I'll see what the chap says when he calls me back. Keep you all posted |
