E90 330d N57 Timing Chain

Hey Folks,

I purchased a 2011 BMW 330D on June 2018 from a local non BMW dealer with 100,000 on the odometer. The car has been serviced from new by BMW Sydney except for the last one at 100,000 kms(at the time, the car was already owned by the dealership in Castle Hill I bough it from). I confirmed from the workshop that the oil used on the last service that they used a BMW approved engine oil.
As of now, the car has done 122,000kms and there is a ticking noise in the engine, started about 2 months ago.

I brought it to a Euro specialist in and they said it's timing chain, $3000 to repair. I feared that they might've associated it with the usual n47 issues, brought it BMW Sydney for a second opinion to have it diagnosed and they came back that it was a timing chain issue and quoted me $6,000 to repair.

I asked BMW if they would consider repairing it under goodwill as the car have relatively low k's and been serviced mostly at BMW and for the only time it wasn't, an approved BMW LL04 oil was used. This was refused so today I shot off a case to consumer affairs to see if I have any options, as I have seen before from another forum, that their 320d, 7 years old at the time, 200k kms was repaired under goodwill, though they only get it's service done at BMW.

So should I just bite the bullet and just take this one on the chin and get it repaired? Any recommendation of a good workshop in sydney?

Thanks

Contact BMW directly yourself. Do you have the diagnosis from BMW Sydney in writing?

So what was the outcome? For the records, your scenario is definitely not unheard of. A lot of BMWs get serviced outside the dealer network after the warranty is over. They will ask for invoices to back up the logbook entries and also to verify the oil used.

Since you purchased the car second hand, that might be difficult unless you had a cooperative previous owner and they went in on your behalf.

Sorry for the late update. But it was indeed a Timing Chain issue which needed to be replaced, so whole engine out.
BMW did not come to the party and said that since the last service was done by an indy and not BMW(this was done before I purchased the car) they could not guarantee which oil was used. Contacted the dealer who sold me the car and was able to get the details and they used an LL04 oil so it was spec, but BMW still refused saying that there was a missed service, I gave up chasing for goodwill as I needed the car running and it might take me a couple of weeks for a result. BMW wanted to charge me 10,000 for the job.

Started looking for Indy who can do it and found a gem recommended by my brother - Oliva Automotive 0402 556 148 (sorry shameless plug). He's just starting out and always up for a challenge. He changed the timing chain and guides with the engine out and charge 2500 for the whole thing.

Car has been running great for the last 4 months so all is well atm.
