I raced a f30 328i

So, yesterday I raced my friend's 2015 328i with my 2006 330i, and he beat me easily. I thought I would leave him behind but it impressed me. He was behind my car, and I was going full throttle on sequential mode, and the 328i reached me, overtook me, and it got more and more away.

Is that normal? jaja

Very normal. He will walk you all day. His car is turbocharged to he has more hp/tq esp on the low end. Even if you were tuned with some bolt ons, he would still walk you. I think his car might even be lighter.

I think it was in 2016. A coworker told me that F30's have launch mode and I should give it a try (I had a loaner for 4.5 mos.). So I did and it "seemed" fast. But living with that car for 4.5 mos. was not fun, on a scale of 0-100, the steering had a feel of 5. The E92 would be 90. It's kind of a shame what's become of the 3 series. Even a 2019 can't win its segment and it was a brand new car when it came in last in a shootout.

It is also the 8 speed transmission. 8 speed auto vs. 6 are .5 seconds quicker to 60.

You guys aren't looking at the bigger picture. The f30 328i have slight more HP but significantly more TQ esp at the low end. It's not just about launch control and the 8 speed transmission

Exactly. Boost means low end torque, something our NA cars is sadly lacking. My 135 will shred the tires at 1500 rpm.

I hate the steering on my f36. When I get behind the wheel of my e90 it just feels so right. But stock for stock acceleration, e90 325/328/330 < f3x 28i as previously mentioned, low end torque is king.

I see now. I'll ask my friend to let me drive the f30 to feel the low end torque difference. But, with all, one thing I love of the 330i e90 is the stock engine and exhaust sound, which is not the same on a 4 cyl engine.

You beat him, because you have an actual real BMW sports sedan, he has a Buick with a propeller badge stuck on the hood.

The newer generation BMW 2.0ls are quite responsive. The twin-scroll turbo spins up pretty quick unlike the older ones. Coupled that with the slick-shifting ZF8, the fxx 3-series can pull quickly ahead of your 330i. Don't forget most 328is with xDrives provide off-the line advantage.

My wife's e84 x28i had a Dinan tune and there was a evening when an STi pulled next to me thinking to take my lane as his is ending 1/4 mile away. He was unpleasantly surprised to not able to gain any ground and had to pull behind the family grocery-getter.

Alas, the new-gen 2.0l turbo-4s all sound like tractors. Devoid of any character. Nothing like the smooth sultry sound of an N-series I6. For that I still prefer driving my 330i.

Not surprising in the least.

The new 340i Msport sedans will walk a E9x M3.... Which, when you think about it, is crazy to think.
Some grandma in a loaded 340i could zip right on by your M.

Thats what turbo engines offer... low end torque, higher HP, and a quicker/faster car.
Same as what is happening with Electric cars... that ugly-ass Cybertruck will probably outrun a sports car in a drag race.... it's going to be weird when an electric Semi-truck is passing a corvette or M.
All of the newer BMW's are all pretty quick... even their "sport SUV /crossover /wanna-be-wagon/mini-van-like" SUV's...

... with all that said, I am also sure that your 330i "drives" and "Feels" better than the f30. Obviously very subjective, but the new BMWs may have all the tech and safety which is great, but they drive like a damn toyota and have lost the "BMW magic"

I would not necessarily condemn newer bmws to Toyota status. Had couple of loaners when had my car getting some stuff done under sulev warranty and I can say that base non-sport f30 328i does feel worse than my e90, but f30 430i gran coupe with msport stuff all over it felt really good, maybe even better than my e90. Might be a new vs old suspension thing, but I liked it. If it had an n55 or b58 in it, it would be hands down better

Not that I would ever street race...... but my dad was in my moms F31 and I was in my E36 M3 with some Dinan bits and we did an acceleration test. He beat me pretty easily. No point in trying my e91 against it.

The F30 has more power and an 8 speed transmission, so no question it will win. This shouldn't have been a surprise. The difference is in the driving experience and connection to the road, which is why many here prefer the E90.

Are you stock? Automatic too sounds like. Curious how mine would fare.

He'd have you to 60, then you'd slowly pass him above 60.
