Catless downpipes but keep orignal secondary cats
Hey guys just wondering if anyone one is running catless downpipes but still have there secondary cats in place? would I be able to pass an emissions test with a setup like this ? also would the secondaries be sufficient to eliminate any smell? Ive looked this up already online cant find any sufficient information on this topic ...

That's what I'm running too, I keep my car in the garage and there was definitely a noticeable smell after put the down pipes on but nothing I can't handle. I don't mind. And I love the added sound.

Catless DPs + Stock DP-Back Exhasut -- Because you removed the primary cats (Which are the only ones that matter), you will still need a DP Fix to Pass OBD Port Testing. You probably won't pass a sniffer test with just the Secondary Cats in

Get a tune (COBB, JB4 or PROcede) so you can maximize your gains & not have to drive around with a CEL. The DP Fix will only let you pass an OBD Test by simulating a "Readyness" status

any other way to tell if the turbos are going besides smoke ? ive always wondered about what condition mine were in ... but i have stock downpipes and secondaries so the smoke probably wouldn't show ?

I have never seen the catless dp/catted tail section in the shop. I'm really curious as to the smell level compared to fully catless. Anyone done both? Comments?

I've got catless DPs with stock midpipes and stock catback. On a true cold start in my garage (with the garage door open obviously ) I smell gas easily, because the secondaries haven't warmed up yet. Once they're warm, they reduce the gas smell significantly- you can't smell it from inside the car unless windows are all the way down and you're stopped at a light. Even then I rarely ever notice the smell and it is extremely faint.

That's not necessarily true. If you're under shooting target it could simply mean the turbos can't give you what you're targeting. More common north of 6000 rpm.

+1 although the turbos may not last forever, siren does not mean catastrophic failure is coming soon.

The main problem is that secondary cats will clog up. Because primary cats filtering and after they becoming worm/hot burning all kind of sh*t. If you will go just with secondary cats they will not last long...

it will tell you SOMETHING'S wrong, but might have absolutely nothing to do with the snails though. I mean if you're maxing fuel trims then you might not reach your boost targets. I guess you can look at WGDC, right?

There is a slight difference in smell from full catless to secondary cats still installed. When I had just catless downpipes and I still had secondary cats the smell was barely noticeable but still apparent compared to fully catted.
Fully catless to me is quite obnoxious. I've had a few cars with full catless modifications and I dont think I will ever go back to it. I dont miss pulling up to lights and catching a wiff of fumes. As far as turbo's going out, smoke out the back is a common culprit, elevated Wastegate duty cycles are another, but one would need to ensure their are no boost leaks before blaming the turbo's. Siren noises CAN be a common characteristic on this car. It's a tiny fan blade that spin's 10's of thousands of RPM's, it's going to make some noises. Obnoxious sire noises at light cruising when the car is full warmed up, along with elevated duty cycles to reach boost target and or oil consumption or smoke out the back may be a sign of turbo failure. If your car is running like a champ, don't worry. If you have some smoke out the back it does not necessarily mean your turbo's are on the way out either. Every scenario does not have an A + B = C One must encompass many details before singling out that one symptom = one failure every time. |
