Undid cylinder head cover bolt, can't tighten!!!

Hello,

Yesterday I undid this bolt by mistake thinking it had some connection to the vacuum pump. Now, it doesn't want to tighten back up! Image on link below to show which one I mean. The one with the rubber under the bolt head.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/2EzjPtXuZ6hSRWX5A

It just spins freely where the thread isn't catching in the hole. The rubber is too stiff to compress. It doesn't want to come out either so I can inspect the hole.

Any ideas?

You could try cutting the rubber bit off with a Stanley knife. This might give the bolt some extra movement so that you can lift it a little to help it catch on the threads to help you extract it. Then it may be a case of retapping the hole and/or just fitting a new bolt and rubber depending on what kind of state it's in.

Hmm yeah could do. Yeah cutting rubber off sounded a bit extreme but think that might be the only way.

I suspect you’ve sheared the bolt inside, it may have been over tightened originally, or it may be Sod’s law. Only one option, take the rest out and sort it.
Or leave it. But don’t do that.

What an absolute ball ache if it's sheared. One problem - it doesn't come out!! There's a sleeve type thing which looks to be flared and it won't pull out..

heating the bolt would normally help, but you got a rubber problem. You may have to go down that road and get a new rubber. it would make getting the bolt out easier.

Thanks all. One last thing I need to try is to try and grip the sleeve and undo the bolt - it may come out like this if the sleeve is threaded too. Not sure. If it does I can inspect the hole to see if it has sheared and then go down the route of Easy Out, re-tap and new bolt.

Looking at an image, the sleeve bit might be threaded!

I am hoping that this just needs moving further up the bolt so it can engage properly into the hole. Fingers crossed!

I think (someone wiser will confirm) that bolt has a second flange, within the sleeve bit, so won’t come out. Again I think it’ll be a case of taking the whole part off, undoing the other screws, removing the offending screw (chop head off) and then refitting the lot. Then becomes a question of “what else whilst it’s off?”. If it is one with a second flange, the same happened on my manifold when I overtightened (working tired...). Had to take all off and back the screw out with pliers.

Good luck, you’ll be a better mechanic for it! 😀

Thanks Matt. Well I was planning to a strip down of the top anyway to check intake manifold and air filter etc. so might be a good idea to do this at the same time.

Appreciate your input.
