Hi All

A neighbour of mine has just purchased his second Rolex and he mentioned that it is more of a 'hand me down' for his son. That got me and missus taking and we don't really have anything with a sentimental value to pass on to our lad.

So as I know there are many watch fans on here then are there any particular makes / models that I should be looking at for future value etc?

Budget around £4k - £5k

I don't intend on wearing the watch, as some of you know I am not a fan

Watches are a very personal thing and peoples tastes vary massively, the advice people on here will give you will be their opinion, you will need to decide what you like - a bit like choosing a car, and you used to have good taste in that department

There are lots of brands that seem to be currently in vogue at the moment, names like Panerai, Hublot, IWC etc all of which are quality pieces and watches that I would have in a heart beat, I just question how in vogue they will be in 5/10/20 years time? If your are in it for the long game, I would look at the old guard - Rolex, Breitling, Cartier, Omega

Of course, this is just my opinion

My GF has said that she wants to buy me a watch as an engagement present, am opting for a Breitling Galactic 41 with leather strap and a black face.

I love my Omega but as has been said, it's an entirely personal thing. I'd enjoy looking around!

I'd want to wear it if I were you, if only a few times. Otherwise would your son associate it with you and would it really have sentimental value?

Casio do some nice watches.

very few if any new watches around that price range will hold their value, as an "heirloom", look at vintage Patek's, Panerai, AP etc....

Couple of nice watches coming up for auction in that price range - a nice 1950's Patek and a 2000 Frank Muller

I dont like Rolex, but the right one holds its value well

There would be no sentiment in a watch my father bought as an investment and never wore.

Don't get me wrong, I would appreciate the thought (maybe sentiment there) and sell it for whatever I could get but surely there are better ways to get growth on your money.

On a more positive answer to your enquiry remember and haggle. Play more than one Jeweller against the other. Lots to be saved in the price bracket your in.

True. Sentiment has more value. I have my Dads old Omega that i'd never part with, no matter what the value

Thanks for the input when I get sometime I will have a look around. Do like the sound of an older / auction piece though.

As for some comments about the 'sentimental value', does is really matter, I don't care at all if he flogs or pawns it as its his decision at the end of day, but I would like to hope he keeps hold of it even though he'd probably say to himself "Why the fu*k didn't you keep your M3 and pass that on, a friggin watch, what's that all about!"

i would buy something he likes if you have no intention on wearing it..

i would also perhaps avoid oversized faces as they will be out of fashion in a few years, and are starting to go now.. but i still like!

if it were me spending 4-5k, i'd get either a Paneri or IWC somethingorother..

I was plesantly surprised at the affordability of Tissot watches.... swiss internals and actually made in Switzerland.. but quartz movement. They have crystal lenses though.

Vintage watches are great but as an investment whilst they will appreciate you may also be paying a hefty premium..

A newish IWC or rolex will appreciate. I have a rolex bought for just over 2k which would cost almost4k to replace. Patel Phillipe great but too expensive. Breitling have to be very careful with model as some are heavily discounted new so affecting resale value, also omegas again have to be very careful which model you get.

Hey thanks, I may well use that 15% offer mate, might not be for a watch though.

My S1 is currently in the workshop getting a few mods done before I pick her up, hopefully this Friday, shocks, induction kit, exhaust, brakes, service etc.

Will check out the SELOC site, thanks for the tip.

My dad gave me his Breitling Chronomat when I graduated college. This mean so much to me, cause i remember when he got it when i was ~7. He wore that watch every day for the next 15 years, and it shows. It's got scratches, nicks, the minutehand is even missing a piece of the phosphorescent material (loose piece taken out of the inside but the hand wasn't replaced) But that's the part i like about it. It's not worth nearly as much as a pristine 15 year old Chronomat, but I know that it took a lot for him to part with this watch, and he still gave it to me. That makes it worth so much to me.

This is the model I'm talking about, like this, but with a dual time band:

Did he have to keep it up his ass for 3 years while being held as a prisoner in Hanoi, to stop the gooks from getting their hands on your birthright ?
