dont worry, new cars have crap mileage. Wait until you have done already 2000 km, then it would start to decline

it actually bothers me why its so high and was consider if i should stop by service center to do a check-up. I call them and one guy answer me saying some other customer with a new car also reported that, they didn't see any problem with the car and those customers never come back a second time for the same complain so he believe its because the consumption would go down to normal level after awhile....should I believe in him. how long should i see substantial improvement?
after run in around 3000km and probably the first oil change will significantly lower the consumption

my s5 has a new reading after a day of city driving, 21.2L/100km

(first post here)

Here in some hilly city traffic, my fuel consumption is about 16-17 L/100km. My conmute is relatively short and full of stop lights. However, if I hit the road (cruise control on a highway), I managed to get down to 6.9 L/100km for several km.

Haven't reset my reading since the first day. Now at ~6500km, it reads 15.5L/100km.... not good. I think either the hilly roads in the Pok Fu Lam district really take a toll on fuel consumption, or there is something wrong with my vehicle.

update

I used to reset it every day or two and the figures really varies alot. it would be 39.5 when I only record my traffic jammed travel from office back home afterwork. no traffic and highway travel could be around 15-16.

but overall, my readings dropped substantially since I last reported here. I have to step-down from my throne. My figure is now stabilized at 17.2. I haven't reset it for weeks so it averaged out my bad traffic and speedway. Didn't know it would be so big a difference for a new car and a now more or less run-in car. my mileage is at around 1500 now.

Guys, I have the 325i 2006 E90, I fill up the fuel tank with 57 Liters, but what worries me most is that I can drive ONLY 375 KM. Until the Low fuel warns me about the need to refuel the car.

Is that SOOOOOOOOOOOOO BADDDDDDDDDDDD?

or I'm doing fine?

Filling tank and watching the odo is the best real life practice to measure CONS. not the readings of the gauge.

Mostly city driving btw.

I normally fuel up my e90 325I manual as soon as the low fuel warning light comes on which is about 53-55litres and it normally runs for 570-600km. I reckon 375 is rather low. I know manual v.s. auto and highway v.s short trips make a difference, but 570 v.s 375 is kind of much. You do the oil change as per the driver manual? Its kind of too long between the recommanded service internal so I would still do it every 5000km or so.

I can managed 600+ km between refuel, if I don't step on the gas too hard, so 375 km is rather low. Check for leaks or other problems.

I have the same concern as you do, tho my total mileage is only 4xx... By reading the threads, I hope it can be improved after the run in period.

By the way, how can I reset the trip mileage?

I change Oil @ 5000 KM, I use Mobile-1 Synthetic Oil rather than Castrol, because I live in 100 F weather, they say, Mobile-1 provides better heat dissipation.

Plus, Fuel is 98 Octane.

Plugs are new, K&N Air Filter.

car has 81K miles.

I sometimes use Fuel Injector cleaners from STP (Complete Fuel System Cleaner)

Since 375 KM is indeed very Low, and knowing that there is no Leak, What can I do?

I don't even floor the car at all, or push it hard, this fuel makes me drive like a grandma.

one final note though................... A/C is always ON.

& I drive the car Alone, no kids, no wife, just me.

Any bright Ideas guys?

375 km on 57 litre works out to be around 15.2 lit/100 km. That isn't too bad compared with ours which is around 19 to 20 lit/100 km.

We live in Conduit Road on the Mid-Levels and our daily commute is basically from home to office in Wanchai and back. We may go to the NT during the weekends a couple of times every month.

Our car is A/T and has done 11k in 27 months. We use Mobil 1 0w-40 oil which was changed at 4k and 10k. Usually we have 1 driver + 1 passenger. The relatively short city and slope climbing trips are probably the culprits for high fuel consumption. BTW, guess touring's weight makes it worse compared with other E9x models.

So should I get my oil changed more frequently than what BMW suggests with their yearly service? I've driven ~ 8000km since my last checkup with BMWHK so I guess I should go and get an oil change myself.

So I head to Mobil and get the Mobil 1 0W-40 or would engine oil from other companies also suffice?

I thought my Conduit Rd fuel consumption was bad, but it isn't comparing with the 323i neighbors.

Hey Bro,

The S5 is indeed an oil drinker....In fact, I gave up my initial thought of purchasing E92 335 i/o S5 is somewhat linkage with this running cost issue when the car price difference is one off paid for it but running cost is counting everyday though.....Moreover, the S5 is no question ask so much eye catching than our E92 335 for sure.......

If you do a lot of short stop-go trips in the city, I would think you should change your engine oil & filter element before your yearly checkup with BMWHK is due. Last time when I changed oil at 6k interval, I found the oil was rather dark.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is the engine oil used by BMWHK and you can't go wrong with that. BTW, saw at Valiant yesterday the original BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 and Super Performance SAE 0w-40 from Germany were on offer in 1 L bottles. Believe both are OE manufactured by Castrol and the former one is the first fill at the BMW manufacturing plant. However some say that the SAE 5W-30 one is only semi-synthetic.
