I think its an XI thing, but why? It makes no sense to have them on the XI and not on non Xdrive cars.

I looked at another 2011 M sport 335 Xdrive today, and it had the same cats/resonators as mine did.

Unfortunately cutting up the stock exhaust is not an option for me.

Maybe the fuel map on xi's are different. Because the engine needs to power all four wheels, it runs slightly rich? I don't know... Just a very wild guess.

Question, does anyone know the part number off the stock FMIC on your E9X? I'm trying to compare the part number with my E70 stock FMIC... If they are the same, then Helix will be able to develop an FMIC for both the 335 and the X5...

I think it is an xi thing as well. One of my customers has an E92 xi 6MT. Cats in the midsection like the N54.

The funny part is the down pipe picture you posted with the 02 sensor in the middle, on the xi it's at the very back. One on top behind the turbo and one at the bottom.

I guess internally they are different. I want to see an I model N55 for comparison.

I have some nice pics to upload in a little bit

The other thing I'm noticing is no diverter valves. None at all, anywhere. I wonder if that's why the car takes forever to wind down after you rev it up. Bmw closes the throttle body slowly to avoid compressor surge I guess...

Quoted from the N55 Manual (thanks to Dave for supplying it)

Diverter valve
The basic function of the diverter valve remains the same. The difference compared to the N54 engine is that the diverter valve is not operated pneumatically. The diverter valve on the N55 engine is an electric actuator that is controlled directly by the DME. The number of components has been greatly reduced by positioning the diverter valve on the turbocharger compressor housing.

ah ha!!

So its in that jumbled mess down by the t-stat/waterpump/turbo inlet pipe jungle...

wasnt this done on the SRT-4 neon? I recall seeing it somewhere that the diverter was built into the compressor housing on some kinda import car..

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought valvetronic engines did not have a throttle body.

I thought power was controlled exclusively by variable valve lift completely eliminating the throttle butterfly, and therefore much of the efficiency loss due to pressure drop across the throttle.

EDIT:

From BMW's website: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/t...lvetronic.html

"The throttle butterfly is no longer needed as a means of controlling the air supply - though for safety reasons it is still fitted as an emergency back-up."
