Washing/cleaning engine and engine bay?

Want to give everything a good scrubbing under the hood. Anyone have any tips?

Thought I'd remove the DCI, put rags inside plastic bags and stuff them in the inlets and wrap the alternator in a plastic bag. Any other parts I should keep from getting wet?

Check for the headlight covers that are always broken. Water enters, sits at bottom and kills the headlight control unit. (at least on an e60 with adaptive lights)

My water pump also stuck on after washing. Have no idea if water ran into the harness or something but damn thing wouldn't turn off.

Definitely a good point on the headlight covers. The water pump thing has me curious - wonder if it'd be worth while to fill all electrical connectors with dielectric grease before spraying things down. Despite that they should be water proof, 10 year old seals might not be up to task anymore.

I've cleaned mine several times and the way I do it is cover the DCIs with foil and bag, and also cover the top of the alternator same way.

Rinse it down, spray the cleaner scrub and rinse it off, get it dry and apply finishing products.
