Switched silencer

In general I love the sound of the exhaust with this silencer disabled. There are times that I'd like it quiet though. And I don't want to get out, go to the trunk, and plug the dam thing in again. From my experience, highway driving is much quieter with the valve in operation. I commute in traffic a lot so the sound gets to much to handle after about 30min on the freeway - particularly at 60-70mph (2k rpm). I'm going to run cable and add a switch for the solenoid by the driver seat so I can turn it on and off. Has anybody else tried this?

hmm sounds familiar... I had this idea a while back and posted it on bimmerforums but didn't really get a response from anyone...

The biggest difference that you feel with this mod is when you start the car cold - then it REALLY roars. What's amusing, though, is when you shut off the engine, the left muffler still leaks smoke (whereas the right one remains closed) - prompting questions from people.

I've done it actually , it makes a really big difference ,, but as some people said , sometimes while listening to music and the exhaust sound a bit higher than normal , it's annoying abit .. I think I'll go back to stock ... specially if it's affect the feul consmp.

Just did this on my E93 - I def notice the difference! Sounds meaner now

This should keep me happy at least until I decide to upgrade the exhaust

Thanks for the DIY!

Sound is a major one, though. When you cruise at <2,500rpm, the noise is QUITE evident. I even had a friend of mine ask why my exhaust was so "loud". I absolutely do not see them having left it like this for a majority non-enthusiast audience who would likely complain that the car is too loud.

I'm curious why Audi doesn't do it like this. I wonder if BMW put on a larger exhaust, but closed off the valve on low RPMs to try to achieve both goals - low noise at low RPMs and high exhaust flow at high RPMs, whereas other manufacturers either go low noise OR high flow+noise?

Just did this to me car. Wow, it really does make a difference. Now I wonder what an after market exhaust would sound like.

Did this mod about 3 weeks ago. Pleased with the results so far. I would say it's most pronounced during a cold start and when revs are just under 3000.

Keep in mind it's the same exhaust system, so you're not going to hear something completely different and it won't be loud enough to wake up the neighbors. It's about 10% louder at low RPMs.

I did notice that my left exhaust tip now has soot, it was sparkling clean before

Enjoy! I recommend it

Still curious what the long term effects are?????? I'm afraid to try it, don't want to jack anything up. How do you do the golf tee mod, if you don't want to unplug the actuator behind the tail light?

Yea, the sound is a bit throatier. I like it, makes me almost want to somehow make it just a tad LOUDER with the same growl, lol.
