There is no point of arguing about manual or auto tranny. These are meant for different tastes and preferences. Majority of ppl like auto, so we see a lot of autos...its that simple. So to say that manual is best and autos are not for real drivers or other way round, is wrong.
I personally like 6MT and believe it or not I like it in the traffic as well. I just hate to keep my foot on brake all the time on a red light or in traffic in an auto tranny.

no problem... there won't be anything to argue in a few years other than nostalgia and legacy

Yep it'll all be autonomous cars with a handful of single gear electric automatics.

If you mean MT will be totally gone, then you are wrong.
If BMW stops making MT, MT lovers will find some other brand :-)

I think with brand new model cars with a MT as a standard option like the BRZ we will see MT cars until they become illegal.

I would bet that there are more old people that know how to drive an MT than there are young people that know how to drive an MT.

I'll go ahead and let Car & Driver do the talking here for all ye that think the DCT is faster/better.

Quote:
But Is It Quicker?

After scouring the test results for some useful conclusion, the answer is “not really.” The M DCT car hit 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, cleared the quarter-mile in 12.7 at 113 mph, and achieved 150 mph in 26 seconds flat. Compare that to the six-speed manual’s numbers of 4.3, 12.8 at 113, and 24.3, respectively. If you zoom in even closer and look at each 10-mph increment, the two cars trade off which is quicker until 120 mph, when the manual starts pulling away. "

M DCT is no doubt a technical marvel, but we don’t yet prefer it to a traditional manual.

Listen, I bought an SMG M3 because I thought I could live with it. I absolutely couldn't - 8 months later I sold it. Test drove the newer DCT and realized, while improved from the SMG, I would still feel the same way. For me, and many others, there simply is no substitute.

I think a good analogy would be fly-fishing vs rod and reel. Same idea except fly fishing is just cooler because it takes a skill and experience.

Or you can think about it this way. I'm just as fast as you in your car, but you can't even drive mine.(If you have an automatic and don't know how to drive stick).

6MT here...no regrets whatsoever. However I'm not stuck in traffic all day everyday. Not sure if that would change my mind. Can't see myself driving Auto anymore.

Perhaps, but it beats being rude, ignorant and unskilled.

I drove MTs in NYC rush hour traffic for years. It never was an issue for me.

I hated seeing the 991 GT3 only offered with PDK. I think it should be a choice to shift on your own in whatever you drive (as far as sports/touring cars go).

That said, for the first time in many years, I am driving an auto. The only time I miss rowing is at the track.

Switched from an 07 is250 6 speed to an 06 325 with auto for the work commute. Maybe if I get a weekend car I will get manual again.

Yeah doubt it would make a real difference for me either. For me it's a few hours of stop and go traffic a week. Doesn't really affect me at all. Pretty much second nature.

I drove MTs exclusively for years and shifting became second nature. I always heeled and toed and I always double clutched. I got to the point where it was not particularly challenging but it was also not anything that I found tedious or inconvenient.

The fact that I was going to be using the car in stop and go traffic would not deter me from purchasing an MT. The other side of the coin is that at this point in time I see no particular advantage to an MT. I understand that there are a lot of MT diehards and I would never attempt to convince them otherwise.

IMO everyone should learn how to drive an MT.
