While the engine is out do the oil pan gasket. Check the RMS. Also replace the accessory belt tensioner.

It's great that you got the factory oil cooler too in your donor car.

With your stated power goals you will want an upgraded (metal) charge pipe, catless downpipes, and a better intercooler. I don't know if the n52 and n54 cars share the same low pressure fuel pump, but if not swap in the 335i one or an aftermarket Walbro. You can also decide if you want to do inlets (from the airbox to the turbos), but if you're staying with stock turbos you probably don't need it. Also budget for a tune to help you reach your power goals. Good luck! Sounds like a cool project.

What do you guys maintenance items should be done when engine is out?
I know valve cover is one of them because its smelly when car idles., Pretty sure leaking from there. What else?

Also thinking about air intake, charge pipes and down pipes.

Thoughts?

If it was me I would do the following: oil pan gasket, rear main seal, oil filter housing gasket, tensioner and belt, water pump and t-stat. If manual then clutch, flywheel, throw-out bearing, slave cylinder. Engine is out so everything is easy to get to and gives you a piece of mind for the next foreseeable future.

I'd also replace the turbo oil lines and coolant line o-rings...although I believe that requires removing the turbos, so an install kit might be a good idea. Actually, I'd want to do as much as possible while it's out. Mainly because so much is difficult to do with the engine installed, and because so much of this stuff can go wrong and if this is a keeper, I'd want as much new stuff as possible to avoid headaches in the near future.

Pics still aren't working, not sure if you have some security on the images or not but I think you have to make them public in order to share them like that.

So, wouldn't it be far cheaper and easier to buy a driving or wrecked wagon from Europe, ship it here, and do the US conversion on it?

There's tons of regulations stopping people bringing cars from continent to continent; in Canada the rule is the car must be over 15 years old, then it's open season & can be imported. Not sure about the US but I imagine you have something similar.

Absolutely not

Its next to impossible and very expensive to import a car and register it in US

umm... no it isn't. You can easily get away with under $4k if you do it right. Read an article where a person imported from Holland an old E30 Estate through customs and registered for just over $2k.

And probably will be far cheaper and less of a kludged nightmare of wiring and computer/code updates than what you are going to do.

I looked into exporting my car to when I was going to be working in Europe. That was till I found out from people over there it was cheaper to buy something over there and either sell it when I left or even ship it back than round trip my car from the states.

But what ever...

yes, what ever.

1. You can import a car that 25 years and older
2. You have no idea what you're talking about.
3. Google it.

I have... and people do it all the time. Guess you missed that part in my post.

You just have to know the right customs broker and the right ICI who will work with you on the conversions.

And to be honest about it... you couldn't even search this site (or any other site for that matter) and find that the conversion you are talking about has been hashed over many many times.

Because they were imported illegally!

Just like the idiots who try to pass of modern Range Rovers as some kind of 1970's model.

ROFLMAO!! WRONG AGAIN!

Because the models of Range Rover they imported DID NOT have an equivalent US model to interchange parts with so they could converted and never be EPA certified. When this was found out, the importer lost their license and was fined. The Rovers were confiscated and CRUSHED!

Maybe you need to take your own advice and GOOGLE how to do the conversion in the first place.
