There isn't a strong market for used Windows computers because all the manufacturers are engrossed in a price war selling on price only not quality. If you can buy a new netbook for £229 why would someone buy my 5 year old Acer which cost £1500 new, second hand on ebay. Currently my Acer is worth around £100 and is in perfect working order.
However Apple apply a different concept on their product promoting quality and it all works form the same supplier. Therefore people who can't buy new pay top dollar for used product. I looked at buying a used mac. The price saving wasn't worth it so I bought a refurbed macbook saving £250. It was cheaper than some that were selling on ebay at the time. Sikkbass, can't believe you would buy a used car but not a used computer!! Ditch the hard drive for a new one if security is an issue and reload all the programs/drivers. If your worried about someone using the used PC for porn activity who is to say someone hasn't already inserted your gearshift somewhere interesting already!! |

If I could save time with an i-mac and have (much) less chance of a computer crash from hell then I'm sold.
Like many here, business computer downtime is wasted time. It seems that despite going for high spec good brand Windows machines, they are next to useless within 18 months. Even keeping them super lean and constantly "tuning" them. Both our machines got very good reviews, both are causing headaches less than 18 months after purchase. This makes the buy price of a Mac much less relevant - will it save time, can my clients seamlessly read, edit and use files sent from it (Word, Xcel, jpegs and pdfs) without any hassles, will it break less, will it stop getting viruses even though I spent decent money of supposedly top notch security software and the most important thing, will it look cool ? |

I must be in a minority.
Presently running 7 desktops (XP 64) and 2 laptops (XP and Win7/ex-Vista). Apart from my Vista laptop (from which I removed the HD and installed a new HD with Windows 7 Ultra 64) all have been faultless - no crashes, no down-time. I can adjust them as I wish, not just plug-and-play. I can only reiterate that Windows 7 is truely a class product. My laptop is now fluid and perky (use it for HD video editing, 3d rendering and other heavy tasks). Really useable in daily use. However, Vista warrants all the criticism it gets. Utter pile of cobbled together sluggish, unresponsive nonsense = AVOID. About creativity. It doesn't really matter what tool you use. You don't need the latest MK IX self-sharpening, laser assisted graphite writing implement if you are skilled with a pencil. But overall, in Pete's case it is down to his son's wishes. D.

Just bought one. The new 27" iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06 Ghz, 2560 x 1440 resolution, 4GB Ram, new Snow Leopard OS, 1TB Hard drive) + iWork. The picture is absolutely stunning, so is the machine itself. The mouse is an ergonomic dream!
I think my son will be absolutely delighted with it and hopefully will provide him with many years of computing! I just need to extract the money from him now ! I may well get a Mac Laptop when it comes to replacing my Acer in a couple of years time, if I like them. I now need to try and sell his current Quad Core PC + 22" TFT. Will probably give eBay a go and if I get £200-£300 that would be great to slightly offset the cost! |

I worked for 18 years only with windows PC. Last autumn I bough a macbook pro 17" and I love it. I should have done this far earlier. It is such a dream. Stable, starts in 12 seconds, shuts down in about 3! try to do that with Windows Everything I attached to it just works, without needed drivers. Making a photo album or a video is just so easy, and you are able to start and end with end without a single crash. Everything with the standard apple software. I didn't buy any software, I use Open Ofice which works fine. I use it to work home, keep the excel format and use it at work again.
I have a apple time machine as well, which has 1TB harddisk and makes automatic over air backups. Sure, I paid more for an Apple, but the easy of use, and the hassle free working is worth it! |

Maximise is not a mac thing. You can hold and drag the bottom right corner of any window to increase its size or press the right hand green button in the top left of the window. This will fit the window to the size of the page your viewing.
Hope that makes sense

Press the eject button on the top right of the keyboard or in finder you will see the CD/DVD on the left and if you move your mouse over you can eject it there. If thats not enough the CD/DVD will also have a icon on your desktop that if you drag towards the 'Trash' the 'Trash' icon will change to an eject icon

Am away at work, so I will be taking it home and letting him loose on it on Thursday night. I didn't really get a great deal, he wanted it NOW and wont wait! I did get iWork for half price. Apple Store haven't got them in stock, there is a three week lead time as they have been so popular.

I have a 15"macbook pro.. love it.. especially the new touchpads, completely changes how I work and how easy it is without a mouse.
Also a mac mini, notably slower, but excellent as a media centre and for basic use of web and office based applications. |

Very rarely got more than 28-30mpg from the Disco3, it was automatic though. 38mpg sounds like steady 50mpg on a motorway and prob a manual.
