Squeaking/creaking noise from the dash when turning the wheel (video included)
Hi everyone
Hoping someone has an idea what this issue could be. This is a 2007 328XI. Please have a look at the video and let me know if you have any thoughts! I recently put in Koni FSDs (if anyone thinks that may have anything to do with it ?) As mentioned in the video this noise started occurring when the temp dipped below ~40F. I have never noticed this on warm days. It's most noticeable when parking and when stationary. My guess on that is because you don't often go to the "extreme" end of the steering range during regular driving. The noise sounds like it is coming from under the dash, drivers side. Directly in front of the driver. I tried doing this already: Did not seem to help. Thanks in advance everyone! |

You got me.....that sound like walking slowly on a plywood floor.
I recommend getting someone else to turn the steering wheel while you get under it and try to pin point it. DN |

I'm experiencing something similar. Did you ever get this resolved?

I have the same issue
This just started a few weeks ago, and it is driving me crazy. I've taken it to a local BMW dealer, but they "can't hear the noise." They must be deaf...

Guys it's more than likely something loose under the car. Jack it up and when you do make sure there's weight on the wheels. Have someone turn the wheel and isolate where the noise is coming from. I had something similar happen and it turned out my steering rack was loose so it was moving back and forth. Took me a total of 15 minutes to fix.

This just started happening to me. I replaced the turbos and had everything below the oil pan off the car. Time to check every connection. Mine is louder and more pronounced than these two videos show.

I've had this problem for over 6 months lol, and it sounds really loud when its cold out. I've had mine out when it was snowing and temp below 10 degrees and it sounds bad but i never got it fixed. Now that the weather has gotten warmer, its slowly going away

Try re-torqueing the support bars under the hood that run over the strut towers. You'll need new bolts (one time use) and the proper E-torx socket.

For all of you having this issue, I had the same and fixed it by retoquing the under hood strut bars. i first retorqued at the strut towers with no success. Finally took the round plastic cap off of the center of the firewall and retorqued the torx bolt under that cap and the creaking is gone.

I suspect someone had to remove your strut braces and did not properly torque the center bolt. From what I've read, it's 100 Nm, plus an additional 100 degrees. It's stupid tight, hence, why you really shouldn't reuse those fasteners. |

had this problem and replaced one of the front strut mounts, problem solved. you can check them by looking under the hood and if the rubber part is cracked it can be the cause of the noise

I've replaced all 3 bolts (picture), but there are no changes, the squeaking noise is still there.
Then, I tried to look under the panell, so I removed the wood trim with air vents, cleaned dust and tried to turn the steering wheel while there is no trim - surprise surprise, no squeaking. Put the trim back - still no squeaking, drove a couple miles and the squeaking is back, bitch. Poltergeist or what? Removed the wood trim again, but this time it does not affect the squeaking sound, it's just there. n0tm3 - what rubber part are you talking about? Could you show the picture? |
