Fixing Fiber Optic (MOST)?
Hi all, trying to get my audio system working after finding a broken fiber optic cable in the trunk wiring harness. Wondering if there is any way to fix what I have. Attached a picture to the post (new so I may have done it wrong).
Just bought an '06 330xi knowing that the radio didn't / doesn't work and incidentally noticed a clunking from the rear of the car. Turns out I had a really bad rear shock mount that actually sheared through the wiring harness for the amp and cd changer on the drivers side. I was able to solder the speaker wires back together but my fixing stopped when i realized two of the fiber optic cables were also worn through. One goes to the plug that would go into the cd changer if the car was equipped, the other cable into the amp. Any chance I can fix this DIY style or will I need to get a new cable and run it from the amp up to the head unit? Or are there any options for non fiber optic connections? |

Get new fiber optic cables. If you don't have the CD changer
you could transfer those over if they are not damaged. or you might be able to use the ones for the Sat Radio module if they are long enough and not being used. All the Fiberoptic Cables meet at a junction box (Most Hub)usually behind the rear seat driver side passenger seat bolster in everything but the convertible. Also picture is out of focus. Look up the satellite module thread on the DIY Board to get and idea what to do at the most Hub. Last edited by ctuna; 02-20-2018 at 08:45 PM.. |

Was able to fix this! Pieced stuff out of some junkyard cars and basically restored all the electrical connections and replaced the fibre optics with new unbroken pieces. If anyone wants some pointers, feel free to PM, I'll do my best to help!

For anyone who may find this thread in the future, the best solution is to determine which "leg" of cabling has been broken and then find a junkyard replacement in the wiring harness. Otherwise, BMW does sell a fibre optic cable repair kit but you will need specialized tools. I found the kit on realoem.
