I Miss My BMW But Do I want A F30... Help

Hi guys. Long time member but first post in a while. I bought my first BMW back in 2012 as a way to stay out of trouble. I always had little tuner cars and turbo cars and it was time to grow up (and stop blowing engines). I knew nothing about BMW and was just given the keys at a dealer and I reluctantly drove it around for a while. Changed my life and opinion of what a quality driving machine is. My E90 was so solid, stable, and confident. Strong engine, strong brakes, and everything had a solid feel. After getting my shop to check it out I bought my 325i Sport Line and loved it.

After 4 years I was hit with some ungodly idea to buy a 2016 ecoboost Mustang. The only thing that car did right was go fast straight after I put a few grand in it. Unfortunately I traded my BMW in for it. It wasn't instant regret but about 45 days later I was sick thinking about how I got rid of a fully loaded E90 for this plastic turd.

To get to the point, I got rid of the Mustang but ironically I am getting a new position at work that will take my company car but give me an allowance for my personal car. I currently live and work in NYC where I don't have to drive for personal reasons much but I will occasionally have to commute to Boston and Atlantic City for work.

I started looking at and driving F30s. WTF did BMW do. I like the styling and the subtle interior upgrades but that car does not drive, feel, sound like(obviously N20), or give me the feeling of an E90. The 2 things that bothered me the most was the seating position and the steering feel or lack of. I felt like I was sitting much higher like the seat is on higher brackets. It was awkward. The steering...well it's clearly heavily assisted. The first time F30 guys complain about the E90 heavy steering but I've driven E36s, E46s, and E90s...Heavy steering is just a 3 series thing. That's what I loved about it.

Am I crazy for wanting to get a 6-10 year old daily to drive all through New England when my company will pay me enough to lease a new F30. I just don't like them at all. Also I'm sure there's a thread on here discussing it but any suggestions. I'm looking for a 328, iDrive, sport line, auto. I'm not too picky. I don't need comfort access or anything crazy. Cold weather package maybe. I'd take a 335 but I'm looking long term reliability here. I'll disappoint myself and by a F80 M3 when/if I move out of the city.

Thoughts?

I'm on the same boat! I feel the same way as you.

Here's some background info:

I own a 2011 E90 328i RWD Auto, my live in gf owns a 2013 F30 328i x-drive auto. With that being said, it's pretty obvious that I have access to both vehicles regularly and have driven both of them extensively.

I WANT to like the F30 but it's just so hard to. The car is too soft and floaty. It does not feel planted and low slung/road hugging the way my E90 does. I also agree with you that the F30 seating position is too high and awkward, my E90 sits much lower to the ground and you feel more nimble. The hood line on the F30 (from the driver's perspective) is just too high.

The reason I want to "like" an F30 so bad is because there are some things that I like about it. That little turbo 4 cylinder is very quick, much faster than our E90 N52/N51 motors. Throw on a JB Plus or a JB4 and you can go catch some stock 335i guys. The 8 speed auto transmission is fantastic, quick smooth shifts. Gas mileage is way better than our E90 325/328/330. The last thing I like about the F30 is that it's just a little more reliable than our E90 generation of cars. No VCG leak issues, oil pan gasket leaks, water pump/thermo stat failures, etc. Basically all the E90 problems that could leave you stranded on the road, the F30 does not have it.

HOWEVER...I value the driving experience way too much to sell my E90 for an F30. The E90 is JUST THAT GOOD! Maybe the G20 can change my mind, we shall see.

For future reference, you should post this in the general section to get more responses.

Yeah I think you are spot on. I had valve cover leaks and rear window regulator failure on my E90 at about 100k miles. Water pump was good shockingly until the time I traded it with 120K. Those were the only problems I had.

I thought it was just me with the seating position. The E90 has a cockpit. You sit lower in the seat and the car. Felt like I was sitting in an office chair in the F30. I do like the N20 and I've been tuning turbo 4s for about 8 years and getting greedy with boost lol but I know the power ecu tuning even if its just playing with WGDC to improve spool time and response. The ZF 8HP is pretty nice though. I cant complain about that. Drove a 328, X3, and X5 with it and damn it shifts nice.

Nah. It was a build quality issue with the mustang. The Ecoboost was quick. Which mustang offers the build quality and solid feel of an E90? GT350? I had rattling dash, misaligned front bumper, chipped paint, and EGR problems at 12k miles on the car. With all the settings and tweaks it was fun to drive but it's 2 completely different qualities of cars. When Ford tells me burning a quart of oil every 1000 miles on a brand new car is fine because they don't build engines to tight enough clearances to prevent burn off, I'm questioning the brand not the model/trim.

I've come to believe the 2 of the best BMWs out there are bargains right now- the e46 ZHP sedan and the 06 E90 330. These cars represent everything we've been told about how a german car supposed to be, fast, sharp and dependable. Others just cost too much to maintain or drive like shit.

lol very true***. BUT, Kids are stupid and don't realize they're driving cars designed for automotive connoisseurs.

***Despite my profile saying I reside in Whitestone, NY, I am currently living in midtown manhattan, no longer own and/or operate the 335 referenced in my signature (also referred to as "my baby"), will soon be a resident of Katonah, NY, currently own/operate an E46 ZHP and have no affiliation of what goes down in or on Francis Lewis Blvd, and the surrounding Whitestone/Malba/Flushing/Fresh Meadows areas lol

Lol I like the disclaimer. I'm currently in West New York, NJ but moving back to Brooklyn ok m a few weeks. Tried living in Jersey for the wife's sake. I hate it. We live right on the Hudson at Port Imperial but all my older neighbors with disposable income are no better on the noise with their M4s, Porsches and Maseratis lol. All night with them.

Yeah it's shameful sometimes seeing how some of these cars are chopped up. I've seen them out at the Mpire meets in Flushing. Great and yeah cars are out there. I just want a solid fun daily. Might lightly tweak somethings but that's really not in my priority list. The F30s just left me wanting more in driving experience and feel.

You got a point. The F series might be lighter, more fuel efficient and even faster on paper but it doesn't feel solid or inspire any real feel like the E9X.

Hopefully with the G series they will get back to the traditional driving experience and feel. Something has to change.

That Q50 red sport seems like a real winner. Supposed to have great tuning potential. I just don't know how it drives. I still can't get in to Mercedes. Felt like you don't get much for your money. Comfortable but not fun to drive unless it has an AMG badge.

Yes the F doesn't feel solid.
I doubt the G is going to feel solid. Steering might feels the same as the F but definitely not going feels like a E.

For Benz, the model just under the Amg is quite good. Like the C400 or C450.
I have been driving the cls400 for quite awhile, I think it's has so much power.

Due to high compression, the Lexus is not really modifiable (turbo/SC) and I haven't seen many company make performance parts (CAI, Exhaust) for the IS.

Meanwhile the Redsport / 3.0t has a VR30DDTT which is a family member of VR38DETT R35 engine. They are classified as successor of the RB gtrs engine.

I went from 5 years of owning an E92 to just buying an F30 335i, and I actually like the steering in it.. It's effortless, and quite comfortable to drive around, and it does feel quite a bit lighter..

My buddy sold his 2013 FBO F30 335i for a mint red FBO E92 M3 and after a year he says he wants his F30 back. FWIW.

I always get a F30 328 (or 330 now?) loaner and I don't like them that much. Feels very numb and "mass produced". I know they made a million+ E92s, but they had a very solid, vault-like quality to them. I don't get that feeling at all from the F30. The interior styling is more modern looking, but it also feels like they took two steps back as far as quality/materials go.
