2009 328i "Service Engine Soon"

The service engine light just came on. The car gave me no notification that anything was wrong through iDrive, the light just sporadically came on. There was no light this morning and now all of a sudden it's on. I checked the tightness of the gas cap and it was tight. I twisted it off and twisted it back on and restarted the engine, to no avail. Vehicle Info in iDrive said everything was OK.

I don't know what it could be, car only has 16,700 miles, what could possibly be the problem?

Could be due for "Inspection I." I think this is recommended at 4 yrs/30,000 miles, whichever comes first. In this case, you may be coming up at the 4-year mark depending on when your car was made. Same thing happened to me. Everything else was up to date on my car (I bought it used): oil, brake fluid, etc. and it had under 30k miles. Turns out it was the first inspection interval for me.

It is the car on a lift icon which indicates a scheduled service, not the SES light. The SES light indicates an emission related malfunction.

The last time I had one, there was a small pressure leak in the gas cap which was then replaced.

Hopefully, the OP is still under warranty so the dealer will sort it out.

Yeah, I didn't make that distinction. Thanks for clarifying!
