Had my 335 a week - only getting around 16-17mpg. That right?

As title says, according to the computer, im only getting 16-17mpg. I do live in London and its obviously a lot of stop, start driving so it may be right. Just wanted to check as I have read here people geiing 29-30mpg from 335s but im guessing this is probably on motorway runs?

Im going on a run to Windsor tonight so will see what mpg I get there. Any other 335 owners in London that can give me their average mpg?

In stop start heavy traffic that sounds absolutely normal

I hope you didn't expect it to do 29-30mpg in stop start traffic

No I really didnt. It seems right to me too. it was only the posts of 29-30mpg that got me thinking. Like I said, was just checking. I would have been amazed if a 3 litre twin turbo car could do more mpg in stop start traffic.

Had mine 3 days now.

Picked it up in central London and had 2Hours stop start traffic all the way home and got 18-20MPG

For the last few day, 90%town 10% Dual Carriage Way i have been getting 20-22MPG and thats not hanging around. Which i don't think is too bad at all, my 2.3T Mazda averaged only 23MPG over 8000 Miles.

So i would say yours seems pretty normal.

Hi,

My tank range on my manual 335i touring is:-

urban commuting I get 300-330 miles/tank

Runs to N Wales 400-450 miles/tank

Variance is down to how hard I pedal the car and which map I run, as car has been boosted recently.

Have been running this one for ~ 2 years now and o/a average is currently 24mpg. This compares well with my previous e46 330i manual saloon which had an o/a av after 8 years of 26mpg.

Hope this helps,

Pave

What have you achieved with your older cars in the same conditions?

I average about 27mpg which is twelve days spent in Aberdeen city centre followed by a reasonable motorway journey every two weeks.

Motorways are 35 to 37 mpg.

Sounds about right!
I get between 14-17 mpg round town when having a little fun also but have magaed 20-21 mpg when driving like a granny at times.
Motorway on a 100 mile run taking it easy around 70-75mph i managed approx 35-37mpg which i bang on for the size of the engine.
Very good on fuel if u take it easy considering its a 3 litre twin turbo.

In london with some commuting out for work im avg 24mpg
Try and keep it out of the turbo in traffic ie use the torque and a high gear if you want to be frugal. Oh and avoid upsetting cayman drives at traffic lights, that will see the mpg tumble!

One of the tuning guys had a 335d London customer with sub 10mpg average. Nothing wrong with the car at all, just the traffic density in the city every day.

I took my 330d from Calne into Bath for a day, couldn't get over 20mpg, it was so congested, and that figure included the trip in and out. Compared to the 42+mpg from the Highlands to Calne in Wiltshire, shows the range of mpg.

For me:

On a decent motorway run - 36mpg
Commute to work on fast A roads, with overtakes, and town driving - 25.2mpg
Exclusive town driving - 18-20mpg (est.)

335d - emapped & no DPF....

best ever was 55mpg (60 mile trip) uber economy one off run in the slow lane -

typical motorway 44 - 47mpg

school runs & city driving in Derby (small city) 31mpg

overall average for last 1000 miles is 35mpg (winter miles)

cold weather & short school runs in winter about 28mpg

Varies greatly on type of journey that you do with a 335d/i & the short stop/start journeys will kill the mpg.

I've been driving a 120d the last couple of weeks.Sunday drive at 50-60mph managed a very good 60.1mpg.

130 miles at 75mph today returned 48mpg but when in town that slumps to 33mpg. Surprised to see a 335d match a 120d as usually the short journeys are the killers for economy with big engines.

Reading what other people post, there does not seem to be much between the 335i and 335d but I guess that will vary hugely to how and where you are driving.

Some people drive like idiots in town. Hard acceleration for 30 metres then slam on the anchors. Like wise on busy motorways.

Drive gently and the economy vastly improves.

tbf i am a very gentle driver and the 335d needs very little throttle to move it ive not seen less than 30mpg all the time ive had it and that was when the egr thermo was playing up. ive driven a manual 335i with the perf exhaust and although the sound id adictive i love the way the diesel drives and would prefer economy over the sound

335i- 16-22 MPG around town and not really with the heaviest of congestion.
25-30 MPG motorway.

330d (E46)-22 MPG in town
44MPG motorway.

Much rather the noise of the petrol though. The (newer) Bmw diesels are fantastic though.
