OBD2 Port, Why the 'Y'?

I bought a 330i a few weeks ago, went to check codes and, surprise, found an extra (male) OBD2 connector assy tapped into the harness
I'm kind of hoping it was something other than what is most likely (a tuner module, a la BMS Powerbox). It fuzzes up my image of the PO as the little old lady from Pasadena and instead see a cocaine-crazed Hollywood leadfoot mercilessly thrashing my prized machine. Do people often use these Y cables for other stuff besides tune modules?
