Buddy in need f help replaced starter and still nothing
Posting for a friend who has n51 128i. Replaced starter with a new unit and still no start. Went through all scenarios checked battery voltage recently replaced and checked ground wire positive wire at jumper location no error codes and settled on replacing starter... Replaced starter and still nothing. No crank just click and hum like before replacing starter. Lucky it died in the garage. Any input ideas appreciated

Get the battery tested/jumped? I did my n54 myself... R&R as it should, snapped on all wiring harnesses, vac lines, bolts, etc... started up just fine. Any other work done prior to your 'starting issues'? Maybe even a defective 'new' unit. Aftermarket?

I ve seen cases where even new units are defective. Exchange new starter with another one. Try to replace it with OEM if you can. BOSCH brand is good OEM. Price should be no more than $150. Good luck!

The starter in my N54 went out while on a trip. The dealer replaced the starter but car would not start due to bad starter. A second starter was installed and the car started.

Wanted to follow up with a thanks to everyone who responded and provide the outcome. Both old and new starter are tested and good. It had to do with the cas module and coding. The coding for clutch press before starting was coded out and it starts fine now every time. I also did replace the clutch safety switch with a new one prior to coding that did not help. There was something preventing the start signal reaching the starter.
