First time E85

put 5 gals of e85 and the rest 93. i have jb4 g5 and set it to map 5

took a long time to fully adapt (about a day) but it is awesome and worth it

smoother, more linear power. more torquey esp with my all wheel i can feel it a great deal

downside is ive been getting (very) long cranks in the mornings so i dont think my fuel pump is happy

mpgs went way down too (expected)

overall it's a great plus and i plan to continue using it for weekend drives.

E85 gives me really rough cold starts. Clears up after about 30 seconds of idling, but it sure makes a difference!

Is it a long crank start or a rough idle....cause rough idle sounds like you might need to look at the injectors.

Its a 2009 with 37K miles so injectors seem like its a stretch since it started when I put 6 gallons of E85 in. I will fill up with 93 and see if it goes away. I thought injectors at first too, but 37K miles and bad injectors after only having been tuned for less than 3K seems really soon.

Wonderful haha. You replace them all? Did you do it yourself, or under warranty?

I diagnosed which one was bad, #6 and took it to the dealer. They proceeded to replace 1-3 and said its fixed. I brought it back a few days later same symptoms and they did 4-6. Under warranty.

You can see which is bad if its leaky by looking at spark plugs after its sat for an hr. The plug will be wet with fuel.

The new version of injectors "require" you to replace entire banks (1-3,4-6) at a time. BUT some people have run the new injector solo with old and have not had problems, so BMW could be blowing smoke up our a$$.

People these days are bashful of tools and doing things themselves even if the tools required cost $30 at Walmart and the DIY is 5 steps.

Although this DIY requires a coding cable ($40-100) and about 5 steps per injector plus 7 steps in INPA.

FWIW I wouldn't jump to injectors without a log/codes.

Ethanol is more dense than gasoline and they're not all that soluble in one another. So when it sits I'd assume you're cranking over a higher percentage of ethanol, which may be why this is an issue.

I'm assuming the fuel pump pulls from the bottom or near bottom of the tank.

I say this bc I've got e85 all around me, no where really to do 3rd gear pulls, but i may leave the car sitting for a few days on end if it's nasty out. So I'm hesitant...

I just installed a jb4 and immediately went to map 5 with 5 gals of e also. Such a HUGE difference. Also blew apart my chargepipe, but thankfully had another one.

I have not had any long cranks or startup problems either.

A few days or even a few weeks isn't going to kill your car. I've had mine parked at an airport two weeks with E50 on a couple occasions, stock 2007 hpfp and injectors still doing alright. I wouldn't let it sit all winter though, gotta start it every coupe weeks and let it come to temp, but that's any car.

I've done all the work on my car myself. It's more the fact injectors are $150 each, you need an INPA cable and a PC (I have a mac), and a special tool. I meant SOL as in my car is out of warranty and that's a lot of money to buy all the stuff and parts to do it.

Either way, I filled up with 93 only so there's only a small amount of E85 left in my tank and my cold start idling is a lot smoother.

if you are under e35 and still are having problems then you either have bad injectors or a dying fuel pump .

I filled up yesterday with a 35% e85/93 mix for the first time. Was already running map 5 hit the freeway on ramps a few times for some WOT pulls and daaaammm it's pretty sweet. Not really helpful to the problem at hand but just wanted to put it out there.

I had 6 gallons in an otherwise full tank of 93. Switched to just 93 to see if that was the culprit and I don't have rough cold starts anymore.

Initial rough cold start seems normal, not a bad trade off for the performance that E gives u I'd say!
