Hi ed335d,

I had seen Carlos' post friday noon (at work), but didn't realise he was talking about the same sort of wear.
Then yesterday the forum was down and today I just logged on and posted.
Sorry for the repost.

Hi,

Did a post about rear tyre wear earlier today without realising the same thing was going on here. Sorry for that.

I have the same sort of wear on the rear tyres (wheels are 19" style 225m) as in the pictures of ed335d. In the middle still 4.5mm left but on the inner edges nothing left after 15,000km.

When I had the standard wheels (17" style 188) wear was normal and even, with 4.5 mm left in the middle and some good tread left on the edges, after 14,500km.

Does anyone know why 19" wear like that and 17" don't?

Could it be that 19" needs a different alignment than 17"?

I would tend to agree with you less pressure is not the answer. I run 42 Psi in the rear tires with even wear on my non-RFT PS-2's. What tire pressure are you running?

No change to my rear camber.
I got 20k miles out of my last set of rear PS-2's but they were past the wear bars a little but it hardly ever rains here in Socal.

They were fairly even and I just found the paperwork for my rear tires and did the math and I really got 24k miles out of them. BTW PS-2's have a softer compound on the outside edge out the tire so that might account for the even wear.

Im still looking for my last two allignment sheets when I find them i'll let you know what the rear camber is on my car.

Hey Carlos,

No, haven't had the alignment checked.
The only difference I see between the 17" and 19" is that with the 19" the inner edge of the tyres is 6mm more to the inside and the outer edge is 2mm more to the outside, given that the tyre is 8mm wider and the offset is now 2mm more.
And the tyres are Bridgestone re050a runflat on both the 17 and 19.

I have even wondered if the 255/30 tyre isn't a bit stretched on the 9x19 rim (given the low and very stiff sidewalls) and that that causes the excessive wear. But then again, I suppose BMW know best.

The car isn't driven that hard, mostly short distances, cold motor.

This is the third set of rear tyres of a colleague of mine on 19" wheels on his 330i cab.

The wear on both tyres is on the inside edge. Gets around 5k from each set!

Has had BMW check the alignment and they say there is no problem.

To me, it looks as if they are catching on something occasionally...

I would get a second opinion on the tracking. Find a garage that users a Hunter Alignment machine, they are the best on the market. http://www.pro-align.co.uk/

Tyres shouldnt wear like that on the inner edge, something is wrong there.

Can't see where they may be catching. BMW have checked the car twice and say there is no problem....

Those tyres were off his SECOND set of split rims !

I'm pretty sure it has sports suspension, too.

I'm glad I'm running on 17" wheels...

My OEM bridgestone RFT rears wore in exactly the same way. The inside 1.5 cm edge was down to the canvas and the rest of the tread to about 2mm. That was after 13500 miles, so not bad wear at the same time.

I now have the falkens all round so it will be interesting to see if they go the same way.

Big Nana, M sport rims yeah?
Mine wore more into the tread than just hte very outside like those pics.

So we have come to the conclusion they all do it near enough.

With the exception of an US car?

HMM i really want to get to the bottom of this with a definitive answer.

So far I believe its the excessive factory camber coupled with softer sidewalls of the Non runflats.

That is definitely a rub mark. (IMO)

Look on the 3rd & 4th tyre photos.

Its not possible for that to be road wear unless the wheel camber was about 30 degrees off vertical!! That bit of the tread is half way round to the sidewall!!

It must be rubbing something at full suspension compression.
