In hindsight, I too would've gone for the 52, but chose the 53 as, on paper, it was superior.

Ah right, to me superiority includes reliability big time.

I'm willing to give up on some ponies and MPGs to save the hassle off potential constant trips to the dealer for this and that.

Agreed, and unfortunately I can't see this getting any better with BMW releasing more complex engines.
