I'm going on a 100 mile journey on Sat so I'll see what it stabilises at on the Motorway. Big improvement with just the new EGR though. |

120 miles journey yesterday. Temp hit 76deg within 4 mins then 84deg within 10 mins.
Remained at 83-84 for the entire length of the motorway (at 85mph with the cruise engaged.) So, If the spec is 88 +/- 5 deg, the main stat is within spec just on the low side. I'm in no rush to change it - will keep an eye on it and budget to change it come winter time (if summer ever arrives....). That pdf guide in the link a few posts above by mistryn is very good - thanks. Oh and 36.4 mpg too. Last edited by Stringbag; 05-13-2012 at 09:26 AM.. |

I ran mine at around 84 - 86C for a few months and then it started dropping off even more, could just make about 81 - 82C from warm up. When I heat tested the old thermostat it was cracking open at about 79C. So you are dropping below a -5C tolerance for opening temperature. HighlandPete |

Also, if you attempt in during the nice weather, it would make it a much better DIY job... |

Thanks for that!
Not had the car long & very pleased with it overall. I got it at a good price knowing that it needed a little tlc and almost certainly had all of the usual 335d problems, so priced that in. So far: Electronic Turbo actuator replaced before I bought it. Service (3rd oil change) - Dealer for the stamp Software update - Dealer EGR stat - DIY I've visually checked the oil breather and vac pipes and they appear to be fine. Silicone spay fixed all the door handles sticking. New mats - BMW dealer on ebay. To do: Red turbo pipe - dealer - been quoted £228 + VAT Small leak from the 'box mechatronik wiring sleeve. - £418 + VAT All alloys need a refurb & the rear replaced (cracked). - ? New steering wheel trim (rubbed off around the buttons) - ? Replace tyres with non run flats. Main stat - ? - don't think i'm brave enough, so we will have to wait and see if I have any cash left! Then attend to some stone chips etc & Cut & polish. And relax. The car is a keeper so I want to get it all sorted. And soon! So, Time to dig some stuff out of the loft then and put it on ebay..... Based on that i need mine doing too
I checked it today, it was sitting at 84 for the hour i was driving. Did notice a regen where it went up to 95 max i think. Then fell gradually back to 84-85. It has always been around 83-85 for as long as i can remember checking it. I'm not too bothered about improving MPG, i just want to make sure the DPF keeps regenerating. On that note, does anyone know if these cars do different types of DPF cycles, e.g. minor or major ones or does it just wait for certain parameters to be met and commence it's standard set purge? |

Id like to know about the dpf cycles as I've never really noticed it doing one but I'm sure that because I do about 20 miles a day on the motorway that it may just do a passive regen maybe.

Since I had mine done, once warmed up never drops back below 88, even on gentle motorway cruising in 6th.
I know it has to be over a certain temp (not sure what that is) for a DPF regen to take place - but if that is 88 or above then people could be shortening the lives of their DPF if putting off replacing their main stat. |

The temperature parameter for a regenereation is ECT of >75C, but there is other criteria that also has to be met, including minimum fuel level. HighlandPete |
