What part of this key are you saying can be programmed without tools. Please let me know..
The standard key functions (remote open/lock via button) and the ability to start when inserted into the dash slot can be enabled in a new key simply by using an existing key to start the car first, then immediate use the new key...no special tool needed, no dealer needed, you can do this yourself if you know the procedure as described in http://www.programyourkeys.com/BMW_5...ogramming.html

Comfort Access functions (lock/unlock and start, all with key in pocket) are only enabled as described by Bavarian Tech.
For CA to work the car needs to learn the key ID, the key needs to learn the car's own ID and the frequencies used by the car to send/receive data to a CA key fob. That is how the car first senses the key's presence and causes the key to respond with its code so the CA functions are enabled only for your key and not someone else's.

Called BMW since THIS says for California Residence to call (others go to dealer - why would this be?). I am an AZ resident, but if it means saving money, does it make sense to say I'm Cali resident just in AZ at the moment?

I have comfort access (CA).
Cost to replace key that will just open doors and start car: $50
Cost for true comfort access key: $250

I'm going to keep hoping the golf course finds it today (left it in a car).... finger's crossed or it sounds like $250 for me (I *love* comfort access!)...

b8b , did you end up ordering the fob through the California number? I'm in the unenviable position of needing a new fob, and the local dealer is quoting 200 labor for the programming (CA) and didn't even price the fob...I can only imagine.

"Remote Control! Unidentified key"

I tried every possible combination to try to get the key to code up the basic functions but no go.

I then took the key and car to my indi who has BMW ISTA which said the key is defective, see below:

So Bimmernav sent me a replacement key but same problem occurs where my car wont even code up the basic functions. Yes I checked the key battery

So the question is does anyone know what could be going wrong and what to try next?

My existing and only CA key works perfectly.

I would appreciate if anyone has any suggestions. I do understand the CA part needs to be coded/programmed but the key should work partly out of the box.
Hi! Did you figure it out. I have the same problem with my new CA key come from dealer. Any thing news?

I ordered locksmith's services from replacementcarkey.org/bmw/ , the work was done within 2-3 hours, rather quality. They also offer keys to buy for price lower than dealerships, but delivery may take 2-3 days, may be will become helpful for someone.

Has anyone actually used the procedure in the above link successfully?

In the same position - has anyone completed this, and where did you buy the fob from?

CA key fob won't work even after new battery

Decided to try my backup key the other day and it didn't unlock the car and wouldn't start the car either. I changed the battery, (2 times just in case it was a bad battery). Still no luck.
Any suggestions? I've moved the battery around, tried 3 different batteries, the car won't respond to the key fob.

Help is appreciated!

Hi I need some help also. I lost my CA key for my 2011 BMW 135i and bought one a supposedly virgin OEM key thru ebay store. I tried clicking it into the slot after turning on the car using my working key. I tried to also program it but it says error 256 like the screenshot. Any tips would be appreciated. thanks

I don't think the ebay key will work. You must buy from the dealer. They will ask for VIN, proof of ownership (title or registration) and your DL.

Alternatively, you can buy it online. I bought one from eEuroParts and was able to program it myself. BTW, the key insert and fob are sold separately. You need to provide the above documentation as well.
