Active Cruise Control (ACC) Retrofit Development Thread

Project Goals:

Spend less than $300 (I spent $350)
Calibrate and code the ACC myself
Have a fully working ACC in my 330i

Known ACC retrofit requirements

You need any 6 cylinder E9X with cruise control + brake function.

Parts required:

ACC Sensor 66316777883
Bracket A 66316769132
Bracket B 66316769133
Sensor Trim 51117154550
Bumper Trim 51117152791
Screws x6 07146959923
Adjustment Nuts x3 66316762520
ACC Stalk 61319203109
20 gauge wire
VW ACC wiring harness

ACC overview video:

Here is where I need everyone's help. The ACC sensor is very difficult to find at a reasonable price. If any of you have or know of an ACC sensor from 2005 to 2012 any BMW send me a PM. If I am successfully with the retrofit I will write a DIY guide like I did with the key fobs.

I just ordered all of the trim, brackets and junk. I spent $95 on that plus $17 on an aftermarket ACC harness from a VW. All of these sensors are made by Bosch and have the same plug. Hopefully by tomorrow I will have everything I need for the retrofit.

Should this read After 09/2005? I have a pre Sept 05 build and adding most things is more difficult than other years.

thanks and have fun with this.

I bought the ACC sensor for $150. All I am missing is the stalk.

Other than EVO w/ATM this is my favorite retrofit, and it was definitely one of the easiest. The stalk was the hardest thing to find. You can do the retrofit, and code the default distance, but I prefer different distances per situation.

I finally found a stalk on Ebay UK. It was from a E91, and realoem did not show it matching for my e93, but looking at pictures I could not see a difference, so I ended up getting it, and it worked perfectly.

Calibration was pretty easy, i used a large dressing mirror (wife was incredulous when she caught me carrying it out to the garage), and INPA.

Running harness from front to drivers footwell was easier than trying to go through ecm housing. Instead of removing fuse box, I used 2 add-a-fuse's to the appropriate fuses on the front.

All in all, it was a VERY simple retrofit, there were dimples in the front showing where to mount the ACC, and I was able to mount the LDM (my car did not come with one) in the stock location.

One thing I would like to mention is, I would make sure you get an ACC2 sensor. I think that is why you mentioned the dates you did, but wasn't sure.

Just curious why this will only work on cars built before above-mentioned date?

Is retrofit for these other vehicles not practically possible, or is it simply a matter of needing different parts?

I’d kill for this option! Will be following this thread closely.

Good luck man

All of the parts are ordered and on their way. Total came out to $350, not bad for a $3k option.

No way.

I always dreamt of having adaptive cruise control. Road trips would be so easy.

This is really interesting!

Same! Imagining just having to touch the steering wheel and never have to touch the pedals like at all on a roadtrip is pretty sweet.

How large of a mirror did you use?

I used a dressing mirror, because it was large enough, that I could easily insure that it was exactly perpendicular to the car. It needs to be vertical to the ground, perpendicular to the car, and something like 47.5 cm (I think) from the sensor. With a large mirror, I simply made sure that same inside corner of both headlights, was 47.5 cm from the mirror, this insured that the mirror was perpendicular to the car. I used a level to insure that the mirror was exactly vertical. And then I used INPA to adjust the sensor as well as possible - when going through the INPA calibration, there are some steps I simply skipped over, to get to the part where it tells me to adjust the screw so many turns one way or the other.

Once INPA said the adjustment was good, I took it out, and checked it. I drove up and down the highway looking to make sure it did not lock on to cars in other lanes, and that it did only lock onto cars in my lane - and that it 'unlocked' from cars when the left my lane. I also checked to make sure it stayed locked onto cars in my lane, in turns -both to the left, and to the right.

The system does work very well, but it's not 'stop and go', it completely ignores stationary objects. So you need to remember if you come up to cars at a light, it's not going to lock onto them, and slow you down.

I did some looking around the engine bay for possible wiring solutions. The OEM wiring for the acc has a ground into the comb, 12v+ that runs into the fuse box with a 10 amp fuse, a signal wire from the cas and the p can lines tap into the wiring harness above the passanger headlight. What I am probably going to do is run ground to the OEM spot, Tap into the p can lines at the cruise control module next to the CAS, run the signal wire to the cas and run 12v to my deleted cig outlet. The two cig outlets in the car take a 20 amp fuse. I want to run my heated steering wheel and ACC into the front cig outlet since I deleted it for a storage bin. The steering wheel and the sensor take about 5 amps a piece leaving 10 amps for the other cig outlet. The ACC and steering wheel will get 18 gauge wires running the power.

If anyone feels like this is not safe tell me since I am not an too knowledgeable on wiring. My electrical engineer friend said it should be good.

when i planned this retrofit i thought it more wise to route pt-can to dsc module because they are talk each other and ldm module also somewhere near (in drivers footwell)

To my understanding of the wiring guide there are two main p can lines from the DSC to the junction box with 7 other modules taping into those lines. Isn't the DSC module in the engine bay as well? I would rather do a wire tap inside the car.

i don't have a pleasure to tap inside car if you can tap at engine bay, you even can tap to PT-CAN at DME box

actually i'd like to comment that
"Known ACC retrofit requirements

Any E90 built before 09/2006 with cruise control + brake function"
this requirement is incorrect, you'll need any 6-cylinder e9x car with cruise control with braking, otherwise you'll need to change instrument cluster because versions without cruise control do not have indicators needed for ACC

I got a bunch of goodies today:

I am amazed how well the ACC sensor responded to plastic polish.

My mounting bracket came in today. I am only missing the wiring harness and the trim for the bumper. Once again we are waiting for the China Post.

I found a full ACC retrofit kit for 700 euros:

https://www.olx.ro/oferta/kit-distro...0-IDa8MMn.html

and a sensor for $190 USD in poland

Today I got bored and mounted the sensor. It is a real tight fit around the bumper.

The bumper has to come off again when I wire it in. Hopefully I can adjust it with the bumper on.
