anyone in here with radar detector?

I'm pretty sick of the cameras all over Melbourne, the speed limits change so much and there are no signs like in Sydney if there is a camera coming up. Not saying I speed excessively all the time but just even in a 70 zone, then if I don't realise that its changed to a 60 zone, or if I'm driving to places I don't know (pretty much all of Melbourne lol), I don't want to keep getting fined, radar detector seems like a good investment.

Which brands would you recommend? and where to order from?

I've downloaded Sygic Speedster for iOS and i'll use it for a few weeks and see how good it is. Just wanted some opinions on radar detectors here in Australia

I didn't think radar detectors were legal in Victoria.

Most patrol cars are equipped with Radar Detector Detectors as they're not legal. That said their RDDs are based off of 08 technology and newer RDs may be invisible to them.

You'll need a good stealth RD if you are in Vic, as mentioned police have RDDs which can detect RDs and will issue you a fine and confiscate your detector.

But yes I do have one and V1, however it is not stealth so not recommended for your case.

Also it depends on what sort of revenue (I mean *safety*) cameras your state uses. WA Have been using laser based cameras (poliscan units) for ages which are much harder to detect from a long distance vs the old mulitnovas.

In my experience with the laser cameras, depending on how it is setup, detection range various greatly from no advance warning (if the camera is setup from behind or at a very sharp angle) to over 200m warning (straight road with camera pointing down).

Also expect of to very little warning time from police with laser guns snipering you.

The other thing you can look at is a laser jammer like the laser interceptor or the new anti laser priority, although those aren't legal government can't let it hurting their revenue stream now can they, LOL).

hmmm I'll have to do more research then, most of the cameras on Vic highways are under bridges and point behind you so you can't even see them before, so something that would detect them are what I'm after, and if it had a jammer that would be a plus.
First I'll see how this app goes since I'm more concerned with fixed cameras rather than mobile cameras. Thanks!!

The Bel STi-R PLUS looks like a nice stealth option.

Also FYI, the fine for using a radar detector (if you get caught) is higher than owning unlicensed fire arms in VIC (around $2k last time I checked)...

We can tell that the government sure got their piorities right...

Wa only state its legal.
I have the bel-sti

A friend uses it also in nsw. Never been caught. And has been saved countless times.

Dont bother buying cheapo ebay ones. They will go off at anything. A infrared sliding door at a local supermarket will set it off. Lol

However i have been done by cheeky speed cameras hiding faceing rear of my car.
Literally zoomed past got flashed even with a radar detector.

Not sure if anyone tried these. Its called "nophoto" plates or something. Its a licence plate frame that mini flashes back at the camera when it recieves a flash making your plates completely white. Its pretty exxy also.. but proven to work. 400-450usd for a single frame. So like under 1k usd for both front and rear.....

hmmm those plates frames seem like a good idea except don't some of the new cameras not use flash anymore?

If you need an undetectable detector, the best one is the Bel STI Magnum (portable version), or if you want one that is hard wired then the STI-R.

However even though this will detector laser in "most" instances as the beam is so small, it really is just an alert to say you have been booked. Laser is instant, radar not. So the best Laser Jammer is:
http://www.radardetectors.com.au/alg9.html

Check out Youtube for its operation. You can set them to constantly jam to gun, which isn't recommended as it is too suspicious. Or you can set them to allow punch through after about 3 seconds, allowing you to slow down and the operator to get a reading, so everybody is happy.

Radar is only used on patrol cars, cameras and handhelds nowadays are all laser.

Hey Lehman, I've got a fair bit of knowledge in this area. As mentioned above, they are big time ILLEGAL in the state of Victoria. In fact, possession of a radar detector carries the BIGGEST penalty in Victoria's legislation in terms of a fine. You're looking at a $2,000 fine if you get busted.

The best ones I personally recommend is the Escort Redline (that's the one I used to have) and the Valentine V1. Btw, if you're thinking you can outsmart the cops with their laser speed guns, think again because even the best radar detectors tend to go off about a second after the cop has already recorded your speed on the laser gun.

You'll need to upgrade and get a RD plus a laser jammer. LPP (Laser Park Pro) is the best.

Oh yeh op forgot to add that there is somwthing better than radar detector or plates!
Its in the UK and be proven to work best.
I forgot wat its called bt i remember reading about it few months ago.

It catches radio frequency of emergency vehicles.
Any car fitted with the unique frequency police/fire/ambulance will beep in a certain radius of ur vehicle. This was also confirmed for mobile cameras as the van had same radio frequency.

No idea if legal here or not. But its 2k pounds
Fitted with a led strip and sound alerting how far the emergency vehicle is. It was made for "safety of alrrting drivers where emergency vehicles are at" but also to avoid cops lol

Cool idea. If the state laws don't say anything about detectors of emergency vehicle radio frequencies, then it should be good to go hey. If the general public can listen in on police channels (IIRC there's apps and websites out there that allow you to do this?) this system shouldn't be an issue

hmmm i dont necessarily want to avoid cops, i have no problem with most of them, just cameras hahaha

i used the Sygic app but it has a hard time detecting my GPS location for some reason, i was using it while using google maps and google maps can track my location easily but Sygic Speedometer kept saying "GPS Inaccurate"

I wish they would bring out a app with Google Maps but had the location of cameras and would give you an audible warning when coming close to one, I remember my dad has one in Korea and it beeps a few times and say "camera 400m" then beeps again just before the camera, something like that would be ideal.

Trapster was good until it got shutdown
Is there anyway to "mark" places on the BMW nav? My Lexus had this feature and I just marked where all the cameras where around my area and areas I go often, although no audible warning, I glance over at my screen often anyway so a visual warning was enough. I wish the Aus BMW maps came with the feature that shows where cameras are, like in Europe.

Just be aware that radar detectors DO NOT detect intersection cameras, they only detect mobile radar cameras.
