Possibly, yep. A broken wire can be really intermittent, it's pretty reasonable to think the weight of your phone holds it more consistently. Or maybe the connector is a bit off.

For issues with steering wheel controls and track info displaying the solution for me was to have music on my iPhone. When I had no music on the phone the info and controls did not work for any streaming service. But when I downloaded a song onto the iPhone everything worked perfectly.

No. Steering controls continue to work great and track info continues to not work.

I know this is going to be a stupid question but can you pick and choose songs using the idrive knob just like as if it were plugged in with the 6fl?

For iDevices, the wma1000 is basically a perfect cable replacement, so wma1000+standard USB cable and good 1 or 2 amp lighter socket adapter is basically perfect.

It's possible for specific services not to work, but in general all the ones I use (pandora, rdio mostly) do.

If thats the case, maybe the iphone doesn't activate any music functionality unless it knows it has music on the device...or something |

My guess is the car, during initial handshake, asks for a track listing, the iPhone replies with nothing, and the car (operating under the assumption that tracks on-device are the be-all-end-all of music on that device) disables functionality.

Troubleshoot this...
Tune2air worked well for a week or so - showed the content name, etc. most of the time. However, after I changed my phone to a 5s, I have not been able to get it to display content info... I have tried resetting all settings on the phone, downloading a few songs onto the iPhone, etc.
The i-drive display flips between "Not Connected" and "iPhone 5s" and finally ends up at "Not Connected". Music still plays but I can't get any display... Any ideas? |

Or your iPod weights the cable in such a way as to hold the fault in place so it looks like it's consistently working.
