Code 4B81 - EGR Rate Control - Control Deviation

Got this one tonight. I drove about 7 miles to a nearby Kia dealer, stopped for about 10 minutes to talk to a sales person about a Soul, then headed back down the road about a mile or two to get on the freeway. As I was accelerating slightly more than average to merge into interstate traffic, the old reduced engine power came on. It had been a while, so I had to fumble to find my CAN tool that I have running on the floor by the door to my left, and then I couldn't remember how long to hold the button. Which is all just as well because when I read the code, it was one I hadn't seen before, the 4B81. According to someone's earlier post it is an EGR Rate Control - Control Deviation. I cleared it. We shall see what the future brings, whether this was a one-off or not. I'm at 34K miles.

Hopefully it doesn't come back but if it does, it can be a few possible issues:

Check the following potential problem sources:Â*
Mass airflow system on engine-side of compressor is leaking.
Leak in exhaust system upstream from turbine.
Defective boost pressure actuator/exhaust turbocharger (in combination with errors related to the boost pressure
actuator).Â*
Defective EGR valve (in combination with EGR valve errors).
Throttle valve defect (in combination with throttle valve faults)
Severe EGR cooler soot accumulation. Applies to engines with single-stage boost: Conduct mass
airflow system test.

Hasn't recurred but I haven't been driving it much. Maybe 20-30 miles since then. I will update as apropos.

Interestingly, I never got this one after blocking my EGR. Have 4B82 all the time, but not the 81. And, on my trip in the mountains the other day, i get it with the engine at the reduced power. Come home, scan it and it is 4B81. I think I also gave it a bit too much on a not fully warmed engine. I have reset it now and today it has not come back yet.

Yozh, is your EGR coded out and you still get 4B82 or you've been running blocked knowing you were going to code it out (in progress I presume)?

My DDE is OEM and is not coded. EGR is blocked but cooler not removed. I get four codes from the block and had none before. The SES does not bother me. Certainly, will be coded out once I do my DDE with the downpipe.
