My Custom DCI, not sure it's done right. HELP!
Sup Peoples,
I recently got the idea (and time) to install a dual cone intake kit in my 335i, like the type BMS sells for over $100 to non-Californians. I went on Amazon and found 2 cone filters with a 2 1/2 inch inlet, I also bought couplers. The couplers were the wrong size, my fault. After a frustrating trip to Home Depot, followed by a frustrating trip to AutoZone, I bought aluminum exhaust couplers. I know PVC couplers are better, but the 'Depoes really couldn't help me at all. After the install, I didn't notice any difference. Nor sound, nor power. My butt-Dyno was not impressed. All the DIYs on DCIs on E90post never stated the inside/outside diameter of the inlet hose, which sort of made the process a guessing game. The keyboard-pounders at AutoZone probably hated seeing me come in every 2 hours with a return/exchange, and the feeling was mutual. If anyone can give me any idea on which couplers to buy and where, you would be given the highest of fives by me. That's how I show my appreciation. Any other tips on the how to improve the process would be mad cool too. I GOT PICS.

It doesn't look much different than BMS DCI. I just installed the DCI yesterday from BMS, and have BMS cowl filters. I can tell you the sound is night and day for me, the intake is very loud and my stock diverter valves were much louder as well (HKS BOV ordered and on the way). It sounds amazing, and like a completely different car, but a lot of it could be my cowl removal too.

I ran these with my JB4 for months, then switched back to stock airbox for a while thinking their wasn't any difference. However when I went back to the DCI I feel like in the upper RPM range I had gained a little more power or atleast easier breathing for the engine. BTW I'm full bolt-on minus meth so that could be why. DCI alone though are definitely not that noticeable. I've also read that removing the cowl really opens up the sound of everything under the hood.

I had a SSTT I bought on ebay. It wasn't till it arrived that it had a note saying it might throw a SES light, but it would go away. It never did. I took it off because I was tired of being asked about the light.
I was looking into JB+ if anyone has one. Also, Burger won't send a dci kit to California, I tried. |

VRSF makes an identical unit, S&B filters and all, just their badge on it. With the running around, cutting, time spent doing all of this, I don't think you saved yourself much money Good job on doing it yourself, but i'm just not a fan of those metal capped cheapo filters. Every time I see them on a car they're all rusted, etc.

I'd be more weary of the filtering capability of a cheap no-name Autozone filter.
We also sell a DCI kit that use the same high quality S&B filters BMS uses for about $95, not sure what your time is worth to you but the $95 is worth more than the two hours spent alone. |

My buddy bought the VRSF DCI for his 135i and it's a nice kit. Basically it's just filters, tube's, 2 clamps if I remember correctly. Pretty much the same as my BMS setup.

Those auto zone filters are crap. Either go with the VRSF ones, or CP-E, etc. They're worth the extra monies.
Also, how can you work at a machine shop and refer to figuring out the inside/outside diameter of an inlet hose as a "guessing game?" What exactly do you do there? This thread is befuddling, to say the least. |

I did this myself but the PVC couplers ended up deforming due to heat. No matter how tight I made the clamps, the couplers would eventually go out of round and become loose. I ended up with BMS DCI, I suspect you will too if you used PVC. Keep an eye on it, like every time you park it for a while. Might fall off. I like the DIY mantra tho.
Edit, totally missed the aluminum part. Well, fair warning to anyone else who might try PVC. |
