What happens if my engine is cranked without the timing belt.
My ac compressor pulley failed last week so my car is currently sitting with no timing belt on. I figured I'd take advantage of the time it was going to be sitting unused and have it towed to my body shop for some body work I've been meaning to have done. My concern is that someone over there will forget that the belt is off and try to turn the engine on. I know it will crank because someone else already did it but I quickly stopped them, but the engine did crank as if it was going to turn on. Will I need to worry about any internal damage from the already passed incident or if someone does this while its in the shop?

You mean the accessory belt right? These cars don't have timing belts nor does the timing chain have anything to do with the ac compressor.

I see well I just learned something about my car today lol, its my first bmw cut me some slack. Yeah then I guess I am referring to the accessory belt. The only things I see running off the belt are the alternator(so obviously the battery won't charge), the ac compressor(which has no pulley on it), and the power steering pump. At least that's all I think runs off this belt, correct me if I'm wrong... So the question now is will the car run? and will any of these components running off the belt be damaged if run with the belt off.

As everyone has said, no timing belt. If you crank it without the accessory belt nothing bad will happen. You'll have no power steering, A/C or charging capabilities though.

like others have said no timing belt. The belt you are talking about runs the alternator and A/C. If runs long enough without the belt you will kill the battery. I believe that's about it. Maybe someone else will correct me if i'm wrong

Ok I see, thanks for the info guys. So the water pump also runs off the chains? not the accessory belt?
Edit: Never mind, I confirmed on realoem.com that the waterpump runs off electricity. Thanks again for clearing this up for me guys. Last edited by EdmJunky; 02-02-2015 at 09:28 PM.. |

OP, your water pump is electric.....not chain or belt.
Also, the serpentine Belt is V Ribbed. So if your broke.....I would be more seriously worried about it shreading and winding around the crank pully and entering your engine. This issue I stated applies mostly to N54 (335i) motors. DN |
