Hybrid turbo longevity. Vargas, RB, etc

Hey guys,
After being almost dead set on a single turbo setup I am starting to doubt that choice because of the lag that comes with it.
I was wondering what sort of boost levels you guys have been running on your hybrid turbos and for how long. Mainly interested in hearing experiences with the vargas stage 2s and the RBs.
I will NOT use E85 or Meth. This will be a strictly pump gas daily driver.

If reliability is a foremost concern (which certainly seems reasonable to me), the physical construction of a bored out stock turbo will never match a properly sized single. Longevity will always be better in a housing that natively accepts a given wheel combination.

Not to mention that if you are octane-limited, you really won't be able to do a lot with hybrid solutions. The require a lot of boost and advance, which in turn requires a lot of octane. @ 17 pounds, on pump gas, my car felt stronger than any RB/STG2 car i've ever been in (including my own).

How worried are you about lag? IMO that's seriously overblown...This motor is efficient with boost, it spools quickly with anything short of a 64mm. Even then, you have a pretty wide powerband. Under WOT it isn't close.

My 2C, i've been in both camps and had positive experiences all around. It's certainly easier to tune for a stock frame solution, much more of a "plug and play" solution.

Thank you very much for your thoughts. I was kind of thinking the same thing in terms of the bored out stock frame. The last thing I want to do is have it all buttoned up and then have to rip it all apart in a year because the turbos are smoking.
The single kit I was looking at uses a 6262 so I will be under the 64mm wheel you mention. I guess another option would be looking into the GTX series.

If you are sticking to JUST pump 91-93 octane fuel, the single turbo will provide great horsepower gains and be faster.

You may want to consider the RB Evo's. No lag and plenty of power. I'm only running 18 psi but I'm over 600rwhp. You could turn up the boost 25-28 if you have the fuel. Im not sure how much power you want but you are able to run straight premium with the Evo's.

This is also a good option

Reliability data for aftermarket turbo setups does not exist. You can get anecdotal information from people's comments here, but there's no true durability comparison out there. My hunch is that a system closer to stock (modified stock turbos), run at a reasonable boost level and well-tuned would be the most durable over time. Not the most powerful, but the most durable.

thanks for the replies everyone.

I guess my main concern with the RB Evo/Vargas 2+ is running them at 20+psi. I know at a 15-17psi setup they would likely last fairly long.

I'll keep this all in mind. I wish there was a single setup that used a BW turbo. I know in the supra community they were some of the most reliable setups you could find.
