Folding mirror fix !!!!!!
Hi, I just bought my third BMW and it have a folding mirror problem. I searched everywhere on the Internet and found nowhere a real way to fix the problem other than... changing the assembly or... cutting the cable and cry...
So yes, I found a real way to repair and really want to share it with you. Please at least thank if you repair yours with this method (you can also give a penny via Paypal ;-) ). The problem: There is a spring and pin inside the assembly that must be locked for the mirror to work correctly, when the mirror is manually folded, the pin retract. Sometime, the pin get dirty and got stuck on his hole. There is no fu***ng way to view and clean this pin without disasembly and the mirror is riveted... The solution: - Remove the mirror cover with a plastic pry (the painted part) - Check at the attached picture - Drill a 1/4 inch hole about 3/16 deep at the marked place until you see the second assembly with a small hole below the first. - Put some break cleaner on the small hole below the one you drilled. - Find a small tool (I used a small allen key) to push on the small hole until the pin move freely. - lubricate with white grease - reset the mirror position, the pin should now lock in place. - be happy (and replug wire if you cut it some time ago) TOTAL TIME: 5 minutes TOTAL COST: 0$ (or 5$ if you dont already have cleaner and lube) DONATE |

I wish I had this info couple months ago. I ended up cutting cable - fixed the problem but i can't fold the mirrors now.
It happened on my driver's side last year and couple months ago on passenger side. |

Interesting...
I might give this a try sometime. I cut my wire a few months back when my passenger side stopped working properly. But... since it's not snapped in the correct position it gets out of adjustment all the time, and it's super annoying. I have to adjust that mirror every few days basically. |

This method did not work for me. Be very careful when you drill. I didn't find the instructions to be very useful and I completely messed up the hole.

What went wrong?

Unless you are anxious to invest $850 in a new mirror., your mess still provides you with a reasonable way out. The entire mechanical operating is made out of a soft metal. I can think of one or two methods to lock your messed up mirror in to the properly folded out position. Obviously, your mirrors will not fold after applying my ideas. Let me know |

This seems like a guide for an LCI version. Does anyone know exactly where the pin is located in the pre-LCI mirror? The space for the hole is smaller in my 2006 E90, so not sure where I should drill.

I did this last week (08 e90). I drilled in the same spot shown in the picture. What isn't obvious (or maybe it is) is that you'll be drilling through two layers. I'd suggest going slowly. As soon as you break through the first layer you'll almost immediately begin drilling through the second. Good luck! Fwiw, this didn't fix my issues.

Thanks for this writeup. Did this today to my 2005 325i.
I used a 5mm drill bit and ended up drilling too far, damaging the spring. To fix it, I pushed down the pin while operating the mirror and when the pin was all the way down, I drilled the hole all the way down to the pin. Tapped the hole with m5 threads, put in a spring from a ballpoint pen and secured it with an m5 screw. Now my mirror is working again.
