summary thread about diesel problems?
I have been trolling around autotrader and have seen several very nice 335d cars on there with good mileage for reasonable prices.
I have seen some of the threads with people complaining about reliability and they mention various 3 letter things. Is there a good thread that summarizes the issues and remedies for these problems that would save me some reading time? |

One a side note, THE TORQUE OF THE DIESEL IS UNBELIEVABLE!!! And 28 MPG in city driving is also a perk. I am not a 335d expert but I hope this helps you decide to bite and join the d group.

LOL...thanks guys. I am not really in the market for one yet...just pre-planning for my actual shopping in about 18 months.
When the d came out I was really amped about it--amazing torque with great gas mileage and I assumed great longevity. Maybe I'll be able to find a low mileage 2012 CPO when I start shopping for real. |

My advise/opinion, don't buy a diesel for assumed longevity, I think that diesels lasting longer than a well maintained gasoline engine are things of the past. I've seen plenty of ford trition V10s cross the 500K mark, and I personally had an Acura which was 350K and still going strong. Besides the body will be crap at 500K miles anyway, and I doubt the transmission will last 500K trouble free miles. Diesels in part used to last longer than gasoline engines due the lubricating properties of the fuel, which has for the most part disappeared with usld. I'd also not buy it because of assumed superior resale, the d doesn't seem to hold any premium over the 335i. Buy a d because you like it and want to own a diesel. P.S. if power is what you're after there is a far bigger selection of parts/bolt ons for the 335i gasoline engines. |

i apologize if my comment sounded criticizing... i meant to ask a valid question why he bought the d after all the stuff he mentioned. just want to hear his personal perspective... if he regrets purchasing his d in april.

Why the D? I liked the power delivery and the instant torque. I wanted something different than all of the big lag big turbo cars I've owned in the past, it really makes tackling traffic easier. Finally it was power without compromise, I could have a car that stock did 0-60 in less than 6 seconds and still got decent fuel economy. I like the environment and always try to buy a car that is more fuel efficient than my last car. (MK6 GTI 23/32) Basically I see the D as a 335i, without any downside. Is the D less expensive to own, given its problems with carbon and emissions reliability vs the 335i's turbo failures and hpfp, probably a wash. That wasn't a factor in my decision making... It was also I've wanted the challenge of modding a diesel, done pleanty of gasoline cars. I've already swapped tires to Michelin Pilot Suport Sports, Koni FSDs are on now (installed this week by me), Next up will be new brake pads, and a tune. |
