The N51 has a lower compression ratio and a different piston design. It also has an extra catalytic converter, a PremAir radiator, and a secondary air pump.

The output of both engines is supposed to be the same.

The N51 has the three-stage intake manifold and the N52 does not. BMW used the three-stage intake manifold on the N51 to compensate for the slightly lower compression ratio as compared to the N52, 10.0:1 compared to 10.7:1. They are both rated at 230 horsepower. There are nine states that require the N51; California, New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Oregon and Washington State. I believe the exhaust systems are the same with both having primary and secondary cataletic converters.

Information addition to what Tom Droze identified...

• [Near engine catalyst with additional underbody catalyst] this not different from N52!
• Secondary air system
• Optimized combustion chamber geometry in cylinder head
• Modified piston crown for 10.0:1 compression
• Plastic valve cover with integrated crankcase vent valve and separator (from N52KP)
• Stainless steel fuel lines with threaded connections
• Radiator with “Prem-air” coating and integrated Environmental Air Catalyst (EAC) sensor
• Throttle system - EGAS08 from N52KP
• Airbox with Activated carbon filter for EVAP control
• Purge system pipes made from 'optimized' plastic

Wilt, common to both the N51 and N52 that I'm aware of are the near engine catalyst with additional underbody catalyst and the air box with the activated carbon filter. A lot of the comparison information that is out there is several years old and the N51 was then compared to the N52 that was in the 330i. From a production cost standpoint a lot of the same components were used in the 328i N51 and N52.

You're on top of things! I just consulted Bentley, and it says both N51 & N52 as well as N54 use two pre-catalytic convertors and two post-catalytic convertors in the exhaust pipes. They also have the post-catalytic convertors welded into the exhaust system. In general, instructions for N51 and N52 emissions component replacement are the same ones. I'm gonna edit my prior post, which I freely admit to having plaguarized previously posted information from numerous sources, on the topic.

I also added information about radiator's integrated EAC sensor.

Some more info, and it says only a percentage of BMW's sold in those states are SULEV, not all of them.

When I ordered my car back in 2008, I had the option to order the N51 or N52. I ordered the N52.

It might have been that a certain percentage had to be SULEV cars (with N51 engines) in certain states.

If it is a 330 it has one. If it a 328i with the N51, it has one. If it is a 328i with an N52, it does not have one.

Type the last seven digits of your VIN and it will tell you which engine you have. Correction to the above, only the 2006 330i has the three-stage intake manifold.
