Catted Downpipe
I found interesting downpipes I wouldn't mind trying out. Does anyone have any experience with Titan motorsports?
Looks pretty good gets a 22hp gain and keeps the car legal http://www.titanmotorsports.com/ulradowihifl.html My car currently has Akra Evo so my secondary cats are already done and i don't want to go full catless. Ive also seen one from Cobb but it doesn't have ant performance figures so I don't know if its worth it over my stock DP |

I have the ar design ones and word is all the catted pipes are the same, they last 6 months or so and then start to throw efficiency codes just like catless and then you wil need a dpfix to get it through emissions or run a flash that disables the cat channel.

That dosen't sound good. I'll try calling tomorrow to see if they offer any warranty. I they would offer a year warranty maybe they have some better quality cats now.
Or is this just the nature of the beast when your dealing with high efficiency cats? |

Its hit an miss with catted downpipes and CEL. It really depends on the DME firmware. Newer firmware is much more tight in terms tolerences.

with AR you can expect your Dp to last longer than other brands but eventually all cats will fail sooner or later

Depends on the cats used. most throw on a $100 ea 200 cell magnaflow cats (then charge you $400-500 extra for their trouble). Now what quality/quantity of precious metals do you expect from a $95 cat? GOOD high flow cats that flow well and filter well are EXPENSIVE. Go look up the prices of HJS cats. There are a few companies that make parts for German cars that use these. They last longer and are much more likely to pass but your DPs would cost $1500-2000 ($1000 just for the two cats + mark up) which is why they don't exist for this platform (2 DPs = 2 cats = not cost effective).

I would gladly pay an extra 500$ to receive a quality product. If people were really looking to save money why even mod a car to make more HP, use more gas, and tires, or buy a BMW. lol
That HJS website gives me some ideas tho maybe cut and paste my existing DP with these cats or or buy some cheaper catless and cut out the width of the HJS. Shouldn't be hard to weld the only issue would be getting the exact geometry of the pipe. |

why do they sell the HJS cats like that? Do exhaust shops already replace broken cats with these?
I just sent the link to my mechanic to see what he thinks. Im pretty handy with a welder just don't know if I can trust myself to maintain the factory alignment. Does any one know the specs for the factory cats, what would be their flow rate? |

The only ones that really lasted where the ones I think AR offered at one time as an option where they would put the HJS cat's in their downpipes, the issue was the HJS cats where $500 each, so it made the AR downpipes $2k or a little more and they stopped making them as they probably had very few sales over the $900 ones.
Like others stated, the older software seems to be less picky about the cat's, but 29.2 and later seemed to throw codes. Originally the AR site specifically said no codes (like when I bought them) but then after a few software updates they threw efficiency codes and AR updated their side to say may throw codes with post 29.2 software, so basically every car will throw codes as the HPFP campaign made sure all cars had newer software. The only real reason to do catted downpipes is to help a bit with sound as they act a bit like resonators and reduce rasp if you don't want the little bit of rasp you get with full catless, or if you have to get through a tailpipe sniff, although the secondaries will usually get you through that.

my secondary cats are gone installed Akra Evo, thats why I was hoping for an option that was a but of a compromise. Would really like to get the 30hp gain of Catless DP but would be fine with 22hp from catted.
Definitely don't want it tho if it won't last or still will throw codes. Maybe ill need to join the club and help it get a little warmer here in Canada. I wonder If one of these companies that is still currently producing Downpipes for the 335 n54 would custom make a set? |

If I ever was "in there anyway" and decided to do downpipes, I'd prob end up with something like VRSF catless pipes and a set of these cats welded in downstream: http://mandrelbendingsolutions.com/m...ded-converter/ I believe there are at least a couple peeps on here with that setup. It seems to be a good solution towards a free-flow downpipe setup where cats are definitely preferred. I wouldn't go out of my way to yank the factory pieces out without reason though, as there are definitely easier/more effective ways to chase power, as already mentioned above. |

HP is an important factor when purchasing modifications, no doubt. However, some modifications, regardless of power gains need to be purchased.
Just like charge pipes add no power but are necessary because the stock plastic pipe is prone to cracking, high flow catted or catless downpipes are necessary to remove backpressure, reduce heat, EGT, ETC. |

I've had AR catted dp's on my car for over three years and they haven't thrown a cel yet. I also have a vanguard catback exhaust so my second cats are gone and everything runs fine. Just passed OBD emissions yesterday haha

AR offer the best catted DP for your car. I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for HFC DP

How about Cobb's DP? Are theirs HFC also or even worth considering....if considering getting catted DP instead of catless?

My plan is to do EVERYTHING possible short of the turbo upgrades and do it quick for maximum enjoyment. Money isn't really an issue since I saved so much buying this car used last winter vs my original plan of new. I would save the turbos for when mine need replacing to get the maximum value from my stock set. Car has 40,000km would be a shame to rip them out so soon.
KBoss! Glad to hear you had good results with your AR catted DP. I think I can get my hands on those from the store that sells the tune and charge pipe I'm buying. How is the AR Catted DP with emissions odor? Ive already notice a much stronger odor now that my secondaries are gone. On a side note with charge pipes. Is it just me or should this BOV be closed while revving your motor? Im leaning towards the Tial BOV either way, I won't need to worry about a Synapse valve blowing all my boost out. I haven't noticed a smell before. In CA I drove around with my windows down all the time and didn't smell anything. Now I live in AZ so my windows are almost always up cause it's so hot haha I'll let you know if I notice anything when it gets cooler. Both CA and AZ emissions were passed with flying colors though
